Sting’s band to play in S.F., but it’s not a Police reunion

Sting’s upcoming tour will see him performing with a trio, but not the one that propelled him to fame.

The “Sting 3.0” tour will showcase the 17-time Grammy winner and former frontman for the Police performing alongside guitarist Dominic Miller and drummer Chris Maas. Together they plan to deliver Sting’s career-spanning sets during multiplenight engagements at intimate venues across North America, including a two-night stint at the Masonic in San Francisco on Nov. 6-7.

General ticket sales started Friday, March 15, via Ticketmaster.

The tour is set to kick off at the Fillmore in Detroit on Sept. 17 and conclude in Los Angeles on Nov. 13. While fans may have hoped for another Police reunion, Sting emphasized that the band’s 20072008 tour was a one-time event.

“When the Police reunited, it had been long enough and it was the right time to do it. And I’m taking credit for that because that was my decision. Doing it again would just be gratuitous and that won’t happen,” Sting told Music Week last year. “But we did it, and everyone was happy that mum and dad got back together again and had one last fling.”

Still, the “Sting 3.0” tour promises an equally intense experience as the songwriter tackles Police classics like “Roxanne” and “Every Breath You Take” through “the urgent lens of a tight three-piece combo.”

The Police formed in 1977 and broke up in 1986. Since then, Sting has navigated a successful solo career that has spawned hits like “Desert Rose,” “Brand New Day” and “All This Time.”

Sting, who brought his musical “The Last Ship” to San Francisco in early 2020, last performed in the city with the San Francisco Symphony in February.
