All southbound lanes of Interstate 680 in the Pleasanton area will be closed for the weekend one more time as part of a repaving project — on April 26-29, Caltrans announced on Friday.

The closure, the last in a series, will take place between the I-580/I-680 connector and Koopman Road starting at 9 p.m. April 26, until 4 a.m. the following Monday.

The roadwork could be postponed in the event of rain, Caltrans said. That happened to several planned closures during the wet winter months, including over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents Day holiday weekends, both of which were rescheduled.

The shutdown is part of a yearlong repaving project. By fully closing the southbound freeway, Caltrans said in a news release, crews can complete the job a year earlier than if the work had been spread out over 40 smaller closures that kept the southbound freeway partially open.

However, “work will continue on southbound I-680 through the year at night under typical lane closures,” the agency said.

During the April weekend shutdown, southbound drivers on I-680 in Concord or Walnut Creek will need to take Highways 4 or 24 to Interstate 80 and then merge onto southbound Interstate 880. In Danville, those heading south will either travel west on I-580 toward Highway 238 to southbound I-880, or take I-580 east to Highway 84, reconnecting with I-680 near Sunol south of the closure.

California Highway Patrol officers and message signs will be on roads to help guide motorists throughout the weekend, according to Caltrans.

On local roads, westbound traffic on Sunol Boulevard and eastbound traffic on Foothill Road will be restricted to northbound I-680 or eastbound Sunol Boulevard, Caltrans said. Southbound Foothill and Pleasanton Sunol Roads will be closed at Castlewood Drive except for residents and emergencies.

All lanes of northbound I-680 are expected to remain open during the closure.
