The planned Friday kickoff of a series of weekend shutdowns on busy Highway 37 in the North Bay — two in each direction — was postponed due to inclement weather, according to Caltrans.

With heavy rain in the forecast this weekend, the four consecutive 55-hour closures between Vallejo and Sears Point now are scheduled to start April 19, an update on the agency’s website said.

The first set of closures, during the weekends of April 19 and April 26, will fully shut down the westbound direction, starting at the Highway 29 junction near Mare Island and extending to the Highway 121 junction at Sears Point. Both westbound closures begin at 9 p.m. Friday and end at 4 a.m.

Monday.

Detours will be in effect, with westbound drivers from Vallejo turning right and exiting onto Highway 29 north toward Napa. In American Canyon they will turn left, heading west on Highways 29-12 to Highway 121. There they will make another left, heading southbound in Sonoma County and returning to Highway 37 at Sears Point.

The eastbound closures are scheduled for the weekends of May 3 and May 10, starting at 10 p.m. Friday and ending at 5 a.m. Monday, with the same detour route in reverse.

The project involves repairing pavement that is worn from “high traffic use” in the major commuter corridor that skirts northern San Pablo Bay, Caltrans said.

Officials say that the weekend shutdowns are a “safer alternative to 30 days of night closures” for both drivers and workers.

All scheduled road work is weather-dependent, Caltrans says. Those with questions or concerns can call the project hotline at 510-286-0319.
