Free outdoor movie series returning

Back for its sixth season, Sundown Cinema returns in May with a seven-film lineup that includes an exclusive screening of “SF’s Lost Landscapes: Found Home Movies,” depicting San Francisco life over a century.

The free outdoor movie series in San Francisco plans to show the film, which is a special cut of Bay Area archivist Rick Prelinger’s “Lost Landscapes of SF,” on Sept. 6 at Duboce Park. The project is a curated montage of home videos pulled from decades of San Francisco history.

While Prelinger has been showing “Lost Landscapes of SF” for 18 years, he said the Sundown Cinema screening will be his first outdoor event with the footage.

“San Franciscans love San Francisco, and ‘SF’s Lost Landscapes’ is going to tap into that love of community,” Stella Lochman, activation and programming director at San Francisco Parks Alliance, told the Chronicle. “It’s a beloved series, and it feels meaningful to give our audience something they can’t see anywhere else.”

Sundown Cinema, cosponsored by Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and Waymo, is scheduled to launch May 17 with a singalong of Gregory Nava’s “Selena” (1997), starring Jennifer Lopez, and wrap up on Oct. 18 with the Tim Burton holiday classic “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993), complete with a costume contest.

This season also includes the series’ first event at Glen Park: a screening of Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth” (1986) on July 12.

“The magic of Sundown Cinema is in the community you find in our city parks, and the films this year really welcome community interaction,” Drew Becher, CEO of San Francisco Parks Alliance, said in a statement. “There’s going to be a lot of singing, laughing, and

cheering. And probably some tears at ‘Selena.’ ”

The events, all on Fridays, begin right after sunset and will feature local food trucks and themed pre-show entertainment. Seating is first come, first served, but San Francisco Parks Alliance members can secure reserved seating online at sfparksalliance.com
