Jorian Wilkins named executive director
The Downtown Association of Santa Cruz board of directors named Jorian Wilkins as the new executive director of the Downtown Association.
Wilkins, who earned a master’s degree from Stanford University, is currently the chief operating officer for Opportunity Collaboration.
“In these unprecedented times, our one-of-a-kind downtown is showing its incredible courage and creativity,” Wilkins said in a prepared release. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to engage with and advocate for the Downtown Businesses bringing their passions and talents to Santa Cruz, defining the neighborhood I proudly call home.”
Wilkins will assume the executive director’s role Tuesday.
Recovery month
On Tuesday,, the Santa Cruz County Substance
Use Disorder Commission will hold its local Recovery Month Celebration virtually on its website. Recovery Month, now in its 31st year nationally, highlights the achievements of individuals who have reclaimed their lives in recovering from substance use disorders, and honors the prevention and treatment services of the providers who make recovery achievable.
The following awards will be given to recognize outstanding contributions in the areas of prevention, treatment, or recovery in Santa Cruz County:
• Carina Reid will receive the Robert E. Neff Award. The award recognizes community members who have demonstrated ex
cellence in service to the recovering community as demonstrated through a commitment to carry the message that recovery is possible.
• Rory Willis will receive the Bill Manov Award. The award recognizes professionals in the field of substance use disorder services who have demonstrated a history of service, dedication and outstanding contributions to the field in prevention, treatment, or recovery.

A birthday swim
Traude Boisvert celebrated her 90th birthday Wednesday — responsibly socially distanced — with her friends at the Silver Dolphins Swim Club, with whom she has been swimming for more than 20 years.
The Silver Dolphins is an exercise and lap swimming group for people age 55 and older. Members have been getting together three days a week for 30 years to exer
cise, socialize and encourage each other to stay fit and healthy.

Omega Nu installs officers
On Sept. 8, Omega Nu chapter of Santa Cruz announced the new board members for 2020-2021. Rather than the traditional Installation dinner, officers were installed via a Zoom meeting with all members in attendance.
Omega Nu Co-Presidents Georgia Chronopoulos and Deme Scott hosted the event and welcomed the new officers.

Omega Nu of Santa Cruz is a volunteer group of more than 40 women that hosts the annual Ducky Derby fundraiser to benefit the community with donations to college scholarships for high school students, local charities, and teachers for public elementary and middle school classroom materials.

The City of Santa Cruz recognized 10 vehicle service facilities among 48 Clean Ocean Business awardees as part of Pollution Prevention Week. The efforts of these businesses have protected the San Lorenzo River, the Monterey
Bay National Marine Sanctuary and local creeks through practices that keep pollutants away from both storm drains and the sewer system, according to a release from Santa Cruz.
