The Nationals have signed manager Dave Martinez to an extension, News+Notes,

Manager Dave Martinez and the Washington Nationals agreed to a multiyear contract extension, the team announced Saturday.

Martinez led the Nationals to the franchise’s first World Series championsh­ip in 2019, his second season as the team’s skipper. When he initially was hired, Martinez signed a three-year deal with a club option for 2021 that had not yet been picked up by the Nationals.

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo referred to the agreement’s “multiyear” nature, but repeatedly refused to reveal anything more specific in response to reporters’ questions.

ASTROS’ PETTIS DIAGNOSED WITH MULTIPLE MYELOMA >> Houston Astros third base coach Gary Pettis has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma and will miss the rest of the 2020 season.

Pettis, 62, is expected to make a full recovery from this cancer of plasma cells. He most recently coached third base in a game on Sept. 15 before being sidelined with hip discomfort.

Pettis has coached in the majors for 23 seasons beginning with the then-California Angels in 1995.

WH I T E SOX’S CORDERO SUSPENDED 3 GAMES>> Major League Baseball suspended Chicago White Sox reliever Jimmy Cordero for three games and fined him an undisclose­d amount for hitting the Cubs’ Willson Contreras with a pitch.

Manager Rick Renteria was suspended for one game, and he and pitching coach Don Cooper were also fined. Renteria expected Cordero to appeal his punishment.

Cordero, Renteria and Cooper were ejected from Friday’s 10- 0 loss by plate umpire Dan Bellino after Cordero hit Contreras with a pitch in the seventh inning. Contreras hit a threerun shot off Dylan Cease in the third, then exited the batter’s box with sky-high bat flip.

FALCONS TOP PICK TERRELL PLACED ON COVID-19 RESERVE LIST >> The Atlanta Falcons placed first-round pick A. J. Terrell on the COVID-19 reserve list, dealing another blow to the winless team’s secondary heading into Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears.

The Falcons (0-2) had already ruled out cornerback Kendall Sheffield (foot) and safety Ricardo Allen (elbow) because of injuries.

Now, they’ll face the Bears (2- 0) without Terrell, the No. 16 overall pick out of Clemson.

RAPIDS, FC CINCINNATI REPORT POSITIVE COVID-19 TESTS >> Colorado’s MLS game against Sporting Kansas City has been postponed after a Rapids player and three staff members tested positive for the coronaviru­s.

A player for FC Cincinnati also tested positive and is in isolation, the team announced. The player, who was not identified, was symptomati­c, the team said.

The Rapids suspended training while the player and staff members who tested positive were isolated. They were not identified. The team has conducted additional testing and contact tracing.

The match between the Rapids and Sporting in Commerce City, Colorado, originally scheduled for Sunday, is the first game to be postponed because of positive COVID-19 cases since the teams returned to play in their local markets following the MLS is Back tournament in Florida.
