Waxem Polo Club gets 12 players named Academic All-Americans
Santa Cruz Waxem Polo Club had 12 players named USA Water Polo 2019-20 Academic All-Americans.
In addition to each player’s success in the pool, each student-athlete posted a 3.50 GPA or better.
Waxem players recognized were Elliot Bowers; Ciera Puente of Aptos; Kelsey Matthies, Sophia Nigh, Deijah Stephens, Cathryn Perry and Nicholas Graessle of Soquel, Ottis Pendergraft and Kameron Vitali of Harbor, Lachlan Nagel of Santa Cruz, and Luca and Sofia Bozzo of Stevenson School.
Soquel’s Quinn Healy of Stanford Water Polo Foundation also made the list.
Vitali made the list for a third straight season.
Nagel, a junior last season, and then- sophomore Matthies were Santa Cruz Coast Athletic Leag ue MVPs in 2019.
Sailing
JACK & JILL REGATTA >> Skippers Scott Nelson, Ryan Schuyler, Chris Hofmann, Mike Evans and Nancy Rinkardt won races races at the Jack & Jill Regatta, hosted by Santa Cruz Yacht Club, on Saturday.
Nelson led Lowly Worm 2.0 to first place in the B Fleet PHRF 102 or greater division in 57:28. The field featured 13 boats.
Schuyler sailed Hanalei to the finish line in 1:02:26 in the two-boat Family (13 and older) division.
Hofmann skippered Odonata in the Jib and Main PHRF 183 and greater division and finished atop the five-boat field by posting a 1:17:33 finish.
Evans and Rinkardt sailed Tonopah Low in the Jib and Main PHRF 180 and lower division in 1:04:50. They had 10 other boats in their race.

ENGLISH LEAGUE ONE >> Midfielder Lynden Gooch, a former Soquel High star, made his first start this season for Sunderland AFC and the Lads won 1- 0 over Peterborough United at Stadium of Light in English League
One play Saturday.
Sunderland (2- 0-1) faces Charlton Athletic (1-2- 0) at The Valley in London on Saturday at 7 a.m.
Peterborough dropped to 1-2- 0.
USL LEAGUE ONE >> Watsonville High alum Giovanni Ramos Godoy scored on a penalty in the 55th minute, but FC Tucson lost 2-1 to Fort Lauderdale CF in USL League One action Saturday.
Fort Lauderdale CF tied the score in the 87th minute and won in stoppage time in the 94th minute.
FC Tucson (4- 6-2) faces host Forward Madison FC
(4- 4-2) at Hart Park in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, on Saturday at 5 p.m.

NFL >> New York Jets rookie safety Ashtyn Davis, a Santa Cruz High and Cal alum, is out with a groin injury for his team’s game at Indianapolis on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.

HOLE-IN- ONE >> Aptos’ Bill Barton aced the 151-yard 18th hole at Pasatiempo Golf Club on Sept. 16 with a 5-iron. It’s his second career ace.
