Sandcastle makes a statement
A recent Sunday was no ordinary day at the beach for Jeff Brown, Andrew Brownstone, Alden Brownstone, Pierce Brownstone and Derek Steveson. The quintet toiled for nearly 12 hours at Capitola Beach on Oct. 3 to build a huge sand sculpture.
After construction was completed, many beachgoers commented how much they enjoyed the finished creation.
Jeff Brown and Andrew Brownstone are no strangers to the construction of sandcastles.
Both were regular competitors in the annual Capitola Begonia Festival’s Sand Sculpture contests many times since 1979.
Education
The following local students were honored for their academic achievement:
• Sierra Dullea, of Santa Cruz, earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
• Brittany Manrubia, of Los Gatos, earned a master of science degree in recreation and sport sciences from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
• Lorna Metzger, of Ben Lomond, earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
Screening raises $13,000
Friends of WomenCARE — LUNAFEST announced that about $13,000 was raised for the group with the September screening of Lunafest, the national traveling festival of short films by, for and about women, supporting women filmmakers.
WomenCARE, the benefi
ciary, provides a safe haven where women with any type of cancer find mutual support, shared experiences, and open hearts.
The event has now raised more than $70,000 over the previous years that this event has screened in Santa Cruz. The Friends of WomenCARE — Lunafest include Laura Gleason, Lara Kilpatrick, Lesley Harris, Eva Brunner and Kathy Ferraro.
Hostel elects new board
The Santa Cruz Hostel Society has elected a new board of directors for 2020-21. The election took place Aug. 22, during the Hostel Society’s annual board meeting which was held via Zoom.
The new board members include president, Richard Larson; vice president, Terri FisherMastick; treasurer, Enda Brennan; secretary, Thomas Karwin; Nancy Harris, Troy Hussey, Momoko Ito, Don Lucky, Lisa McAndrews and Sheryl McEwan.
Chaminade completes renovation
The 156-room Chaminade Resort & Spa celebrated the completion of a $10 million transformation, according to a release from the resort.
To restore the integrity of the property’s 1930s iconic Spanish Revival architecture, the property’s public spaces including a new arrival experience, lobby, restaurant and lounge with spectacular views, the expansive outdoors and firepit areas as well as its 12,000 square feet of meeting and event space.
The 300-acre mountaintop retreat, at 1 Chaminade Lane, is just minutes from the famed Santa Cruz Boardwalk and beaches.
Queer Youth Leadership Awards
Five high school students were named awardees of the Queer Youth Leadership Award at the 23rd annual Queer Youth Leadership Awards on Saturday.
The awardees included Anthony Flores of Watsonville High School, Caleb Lennon of Cypress High School, Jeydon Hernandez- Cordero of Delta Charter High School along with Camila Snyder-Alaniz and Matthew Domenichelli of Santa Cruz High School.
Nominees for the award included Abby Sotelo, Guillermo Mares Cervantes, Linus Harless, Nick Perry, Reyes Morales Warne and Tabitha Humble.
Michelle Brandt, cofacilitator of TransFamilies of Santa Cruz County was named the awardee of the Ally to Queer Youth Award. The nominees included Faris Sabbah, Michele Delibert, Ryan Bosson, Shannon Kelly and Yvette Castillo.
The award for the Organizational Ally to
Queer Youth Award went to Santa Cruz Derby Groms & Santa Cruz Derby Girls.
Canepa donates
Bay Area and Santa Cruz County collector car and restoration company, Canepa, announced that it will be making a continued special donation to Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County due to food shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Canepa has pledged a donation for every collector car that is sold during the pandemic, beginning in April of 2020. To date, Canepa has donated $40,000 and will be continuing this donation for the foreseeable future. The monetary donation represents 160,000 meals that Second Harvest Food Bank is able to distribute to those who need nutrition support.
