Ex-Soquel soccer star Gooch, Sunderland able to stay unbeaten

Former Soquel High soccer star Lynden Gooch started and earned an assist as Sunderland AFC beat Swindon Town 2- 0 in EFL League One action at County Ground Stadium in Swindon, England, on Saturday.

Gooch assisted Charlie Wyke’s decisive goal in the 37th minute. Chris Maguire scored on a penalty kick in the 57th minute.

The Lads (3- 0-2), who climbed into fifth place with their win, face Crew Alexandra (2-2-1) on Tuesday at 11 a.m. and Portsmouth (2-2-2) on Saturday on Saturday at 7 a.m. Swindon Town drops to 2- 4- 0.

USL LEAGUE ONE >> Watsonvill­e High alumnus Giovanni Godoy, a forward for FC Tucson, was named to the USL League One Team of the Week for Week 13.

Godoy scored two goals on seven total shots across two matches, including the game-winner in FC Tucson’s 1- 0 victory over Tormenta FC, while completing 43 of 61 passes and winning 12 of 18 duels overall.

FC Tucson (5- 6- 4) was scheduled to face Orlando City U-23 (1-8-3) late Saturday.

Disc golf

NORCAL SERIES CHAMPIONSH­IPS >> Jacob Blair of Watsonvill­e was tied for fifth place after the first round of the NorCal Series Championsh­ips in Browns Valley on Saturday.

Blair opened with 4-under-par 50 at Browns-nBows Disc Golf. The second round was slated for Saturday afternoon and the final round takes place Sunday.

Thomas Tomaselli of Soquel shot 54 and was tied for 18th, and Nathan Vincent of Aptos was tied for 22nd at 56.

Leif Swenson of Davis led at 8-under 46.

Jenny Umstead of Santa Cruz was tied for fifth in the women’s Open division. She shot 7- over 61.

Nicole Bradley of Kings Beach led the women after firing 2-under-par 52 in the opening round.
