MVC soccer player Thornburg commits to Roberts Wesleyan.

Lynden Gooch returns to pitch for Sunderland

Monte Vista Christian School senior Sara Thornburg has committed to play soccer at NCAA Division II Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, N.Y.

Thornburg, a 5-foot-10 attacking midfielder and forward, helped the Mustangs reach the Central Coast Section Division IV semifinals as a sophomore in 2018-19 and D-III quarterfin­als as a junior in 2019-20.

She was chosen a s a secondteam all-Pacific Coast Athletic League selection each of the past two seasons, doing so in the Cypress Division in ’19 and Mission Division last season.

The Redhawks, also a member of the National Christian College Athletic Associatio­n, compete in the East Coast Conference. They went 10- 6- 3 overall, 3- 3-2 in conference in 2019.

GOOCH RETURNS >> Former Soquel High star Lynden Gooch, recovering from an injury, saw his first game action since Nov. 21 in Sunderland AFC’s 1-1 draw with AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday at Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats were without eight players after coronaviru­s outbreak on the team. Manager Lee Johnson told reporters he believed the game should have been called off.

Sunderland ( 7- 3-7; 28 points) informed the English Football League on Wednesday that it won’t be able to participat­e in its next three matches. The Black Cats plan to return to the pitch at Accrington Stanley on Dec. 29.

Gooch has two goals and four assists in EFL League One matches this year.

Scheleglea­t finished with a two- day total of 43- overpar 185 at TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Paul Erdman of Erie, Colorado, won with a 3-under-par 139 total. The field featured 181 players.
