Cabrillo opts into CCCAA’s Spring I season plan
APTOS >> Cabrillo College’s athletics department has opted in for spring competition in 2021. Its decision is predicated upon compliance with state and county guidelines allowing for athletic activity.
“We are dedicated to providing opportunities for studentathletes to compete and develop in 2021 in all 14 sports we currently offer within the California Community College Athletic Association’s modified season structure,” the Seahawks’ athletics department stated in a release Christmas Eve.
The announcement comes in the wake of the CCCAA’s requested Dec. 18 decision deadline, which presented a road to competition via a condensed conference format broken into Spring I and Spring II terms. The opt-in deadline for Spring II sports is in mid-February.
Spring I sports include: basketball, cross country, football, women’s golf, soccer, women’s volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Official practice for the Spring I season can begin Jan. 18, while competition is slated for Feb. 5-April 17.
The traditional spring sports comprise the Spring II season, allowing official practice to begin March 27 with a competitive season from April 10-June 23. Due to the circumstances of a modified season, all studentathletes who choose to compete will not be charged a season of eligibility according to
the CCCAA.
“As a department, we have all been working to return to play since March 12 with the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff in the forefront of our minds,” said Mark Ramsey, Cabrillo’s Associate Dean of Athletics. “It has been inspiring watching our coach
ing staffs pivot to support student-athletes who find themselves in uncharted waters, taking on challenges we didn’t anticipate facing this time last year. Our hope is to be back to competition as soon as we can do so safely and in compliance with the guidance of local and state agencies.”
