49ers’ Warner crowned All-Pro

F r e d Wa r ner ’ s no - ble nickname caught on quickly during this otherwise dreary San Francisco 49ers’ season.

“All-Pro Fred!!!!!” an injured Richard Sherman tweeted Oct. 25, as he watched on television from home while Warner and the 49ers routed the New England Patriots.

On Friday, Warner officially became an All-Pro, bestowed that honor not just by adoring teammates but The Associated Press’ football writers.

That caps quite a collection of honors Warner received in his third season as a versatile linebacker, including for the first time in his career:

• Pro Bowl, one of the 49ers’ three this season.

• Team captain, one of the 49ers’ seven.

• Len Eshmont Award, as voted upon by fellow 49ers players for inspiration and courageous player.

• Bill Walsh Award, as awarded by coaches for professional excellence.

Warner’s 125 tackles ranked 10th in the NFL, and his coverage excellence was reflected in his two interceptions. He also recovered two fumbles, forced one and had one sack.

A 2018 third-round draft pick from BYU, he is eligible for a contact extension this offseason.

Warner received the most All-Pro votes (39) among NFL linebackers, followed by Seattle’s Bobby Wagner (35).

Former 49ers teammates DeForest Buckner made the All-Pro first team after being traded in March to the Indianapolis Colts, who also produced an All-Pro linebacker in Darius Leonard (18 votes).

George Kittle’s 2019 firstteam All-Pro spot at tight end was reclaimed this year by the Kansas City Chiefs’ Travis Kelce. There was no second-team All-Pro tight end. Kittle missed half the season with knee and foot injuries.

Trent Williams, who made the Pro Bowl in his first season with the 49ers, was beaten out for All-Pro left tackle spots by the Green Bay Packers’ David Bakhtiari (first team) and Denver’s Garett Bolles.

There was no All-Pro fullback slot, thus denying the 49ers’ five-time Pro Bowler Kyle Juszczyk more recognition before he hits free agency.
