SC’s Bartlett takes second at USA Surfing event

Santa Cruz’s Adam Bartlett took second place in the Boys U14 division at the Toyota USA Surfing Prime Series in Huntington Beach on Sunday.

It was the first USA Surfing event on the West Coast in more than a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bartlett finished second to Rex Hennings of San Clemente. Petey Romaniuk of Huntington Beach took third and Charlie Stevens of San Clemente was fourth.

Wave conditions shifted from grindy and blown out to off shore and groomed with surfers having to adjust and chase opportunities.

Highlights included double wins in girls U16 and U18 for San Clemente’s Sawyer Lindblad and double podiums for Caitlin Simmers of Oceanside. Cole McCaffray of Encinitas won the Boys U16 with the highest score of the day — an 8.67.

PUERTO RICO OPEN QUALIFIER >> Aptos’ Eddie Olson shot 1-over-par 72 and was unable to advance from a Puerto Rico Open qualifier on Monday at PGA National Resort & Spa’s Estates Course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The low four scorers advance to the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open, which takes place Thursday through Sunday at Grand Reserve Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

Advancing from PGA National was medalist Zach Smith (8-under 63), Donnie Trosper (64), Dalton Ward (64), Dylan Meyer (65), Yohann Benson (65) and Ben Cook (65).

HOLE-IN-ONE >> Santa Clara’s Paul Grossi earned his first career ace Thursday at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz. He holed out his 6-iron tee shot from 172 yards out on hole No. 5.

Track and field

FRASER PACES RUNNERS >> Several Bowerman Track Club runners earned places on all-time lists at The Ten, a 10,000-meter race hosted by Sound Running, in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday night.

Bowerman teammates Vanessa Fraser and Courtney Frerichs paced the field for the first four miles of the race, putting the runners on track of their goal to run under the Olympic standard (31:25).

Fraser, a Scotts Valley High and Stanford University alumna who ran the second-fastest U.S. 5,000-meter time ever recorded indoors last year, brought the runners through two miles in 9:59 before stepping off the track.

A total of 10 runners in the men’s and women’s race achieved the Olympic standard in the event. Elise Cranny won the women’s race in 30:47.42, earning the No. 3 spot on the U.S. all-time list. Karissa Schweizer finished less than a second behind, nabbing the No. 4 all-time spot.
