Giants make moves with pitchers

- By Kerry Crowley

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. >> The San Francisco Giants are happy with the progress right-hander Tyler Beede has made while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, but fans won’t get the chance to see him pitch for at least another three months.

The club transferred Beede to the 60-day injured list Friday to clear a roster spot for right-handed pitching prospect Jordan Humphreys, who is back with the organization after being designated for assignment this offseason.

Beede threw his fourth bullpen of the spring this week and continues to impress manager Gabe Kapler, but it was unlikely the starter would have been healthy enough to contribute to the major league staff before May 31, which is when he’ll be eligible to return from the injured list. The Vanderbilt product underwent Tommy John surgery last March and the Giants’ plan is still to have him pitch in games this May, but those appearances will now come on a rehab assignment that will allow him to remain on the 60day injured list.

The decision to move Beede to the 60-day injured list comes only days after Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said it was too soon to rule him out for the first two months of the regular season. Zaidi said that after the designated reliever Trevor Gott for assignment to create a roster opening for free agent signee, starting pitcher Aaron Sanchez.

The decision to cut Gott didn’t end up costing the Giants a bullpen option as the right-hander cleared waivers Friday and was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento. The transaction allows the Giants to keep Gott in major league camp as a non-roster invitee, which will give him an opportunity to win his roster spot back with strong performances during Cactus Leauge play.

What changed in the time Zaidi said it was too early to make a call on Beede being transferred to the 60-day injured list? Humphreys became available.

The Giants initially traded for the right-hander last summer in deal that sent outfielder Billy Hamilton to the Mets. Humphreys was regarded as a top30 prospect in New York’s farm system at the time of the deal and was expected to spend time at the Giants’ alternate site last summer, but he was placed on the restricted list to deal with an undisclosed personal matter.

Facing a roster crunch in the offseason, the Giants cut Humphreys.
