Cabrillo alum de Geus is last local star remaining in big league camp
Santa Cruz County had four pitchers in big league camp at the outset of spring training. One remains: Cabrillo College alum Brett de Geus, a 6-foot-2 righthanded pitcher and member of the Texas Rangers’ 40-man roster.
De Geus, plucked from the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers with the second overall pick of the 2021 Rule 5 Draft, has a good chance of making the Rangers as a middle reliever.
Shane Carle, a 6-4 righthander, Clayton Andrews,
a 5-6 lefty, and Tyler Gilbert, a 6-3, lefty, were all reassigned to minor league camp Friday as teams trimmed their rosters.
Carle, a Scotts Valley High and Cabrillo alum, was among 11 Cincinnati Reds reassigned; Andrews, a Cabrillo alum, was among nine Milwaukee Brewers sent down, and Gilbert, a San Lorenzo Valley alum,
was among seven Arizona Diamondbacks reassigned.
Optioned players can still appear in MLB spring training games.
De Geus (1-0) has appeared in three games this spring and hasn’t allowed a run over three innings of work. He has recorded three strikeouts with no walks and given up just one hit.
Carle, a former MLBer, is 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA over four appearances. In four innings, he gave up six runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out one batter.
Andrews posted a 5.40 ERA over three appearances. In 3 1/3 innings, he gave up four hits and two earned runs. He walked one batter and struck out three.
Gilbert had a 3.86 ERA in three appearances. He gave up two hits, one walk, and one run over 2 1/3 innings, while striking out three batters.
