Science, engineerin­g fair names winners

Isla Hardy, Leila Jones and Michelle Nazareth were the division winners of the County Science and Engineerin­g Fair.

Isla Hardy, Leila Jones and Michelle Nazareth were named the division winners of the annual Santa Cruz County Science and Engineerin­g Fair.

Hardy earned top honors in the Elementary Division for students in fourth grade or fifth grade. Hardy took first in microbiolo­gy and earned the Museum of Discovery award.

Jones took top honors in the Junior Division for sixth grade, seventh grade and eighth grade. Jones’ awards included a first in Animal and Plant Science along with a California State Science and Engineerin­g Fair award.

Nazareth earned top honors in the Senior division. Nazareth also earned first ISEF qualifier, California State Science and Engineerin­g Fair, U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize, California Society for Biomedical Research Award.

Other Elementary Division honorees included Nolan Wilson, Jaxon Robinson, Alida Keet, Beatrice Campbell, Brandon Hagen, Katarina King, Dhiya Shetty, Tiffany Juarez Munoz, Benjamin Villanueva, Haisley Flanagan and Owen Watson.

Other Junior Division honorees included Bethany Mansfield, Levi Tabor, Chiara Rojas, Izabela Wilson, Hailey Ritter, Lovela Jones, Isla Rosenthal, Hazel Campbell, AJ DaCosta, Damian Spracklen, Caleb Cmaylo, Thomas May, Aaron Galvan, Orion Pappas, Farrah Hartje, Dylan Turzak, Reese Roussopoul­os and Ruby Rae Evans.

Other Senior Division honorees included Marcus Spracklen, Diana Alivov and Marco Evans.

Salud receives grant

Salud Para La Gente, a health care provider with 12 clinics and 43 years of experience to mostly Latino agricultur­al workers, received a $100,000 Kaiser Permanente grant to adapt to the needs of patients during the pandemic.

Salud Para La Gente is one of six organizati­ons in Santa Cruz County that received a total of more than $1 million in grants from Kaiser Permanente to support health care access for underserve­d people in 2020. The other grantees are Coastal Kids Home Care, Dientes Community Dental Care, First 5 of Santa Cruz County, Health Improvemen­t Partnershi­p of Santa Cruz County and Santa Cruz Community Health.

Meals donated

The Santa Cruz Warriors, Kaiser Permanente and The Athletes’ Corner donated 50,280 meals to Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz County through the Swishes for Dishes initiative, the team announced.

Launched in December 2020 with the Golden State Warriors, Kaiser Permanente and The Athletes’ Corner, Swishes for Dishes is an initiative designed to address food insecurity issues throughout the Bay Area.

Santa Cruz donated 30 meals per point the Warriors scored during the 2020-21 regular season in Orlando. With a goal of 50,000 meals, the Sea Dubs surpassed that target and scored 1,676 points throughout the season, totaling 50,280 meals for the Santa Cruz community.
