SC grabs top 3 spots in SCSSL shortboard final
Tyler Chin, Cole Renfrew and Reef Bennett finished 1-2-3, respectively, in the men’s shortboard final.
Santa Cruz High’s Tyler Chin, Cole Renfrew and Reef Bennett finished 1-2-3, respectively, in the men’s shortboard final at Steamer Lane on Saturday in the second of five Santa Cruz Scholastic Surf League competitions this season.
Their finishes helped Santa Cruz beat Aptos 68-33. Soquel topped Half Moon Bay, 57.552.5; and Santa Cruz Mountain beat Marin, 68.5-42.5.
In the women’s shortboard final, HMB’s Zoe Chait won, finishing ahead of Santa Cruz’s Keanna Miller and Santa Cruz Mountain’s Skye Davies.
Davies also took third in the women’s longboard final, finishing behind champion Maddie Storrer of Soquel and runner-up Faith Bartlett
of Santa Cruz.
HMB’s Dayton Lindsey won the men’s longboard final, Santa Cruz Mountain’s Jonathan DeGrandpre was second and HMB’s Dedon Prince was third.
Event No. 3 takes place at Pleasure Point/The Hook on either April 3 or 4. The competition date will be finalized the Wednesday before the contest.
Girls tennis
APTOS 7, HARBOR 0 >> Freshman Rebecca Fuller beat Asha Lawson at No. 1 singles and the Mariners earned a sweep in their SCCAL match Friday.
No. 2 Juliet Sweet, No. 3 Autumn Zaretsky and No. 4 Ashley Lavender also earned singles wins.
No. 1 Annika Lee and Jilliane Beltran, No. 2 Madison James and Santana Rigor and No. 3 Taylro Hilger and Chloe Chausse earned doubles wins.
Aptos improved to 3-0; Harbor dropped to 1-2.
Girls beach volleyball
SANTA CRUZ 5, SOQUEL 1 >> Cardinals junior Marilu Pally and freshman teammate Sadie Jeffrey outlasted Knights junior Ciara Cantlen and senior Ava Adamsen, 21-18, 21-23, 155, in the No. 1 spot of their Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League match Friday at Main Beach.
No. 2 Josie Wilson and Kelea Saxton-Vaka (21-13, 21-11), No. 3 Gigi Brown and Cassidy Beck-Watts (21-14, 21-13), No. 4 Coral Rayfield and Sarah Jutson (21-16, 2117) and No. 5 Grace Brown and Chloe Van Dongen (213, 21-4) also won for the Cardinals.
Soquel sophomores Madeline Petersen Gianna Winterhalder won 21-18, 21-9 in match No. 6.
