QB Doyle throws for 3 TDs, runs for another as MVC rallies past crosstown foe St. Francis

WATSONVILLE >> Quarterback Brendan Doyle passed for three touchdowns and ran for a 35yard score as the Mustangs beat St. Francis 42-21 for their third straight Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League win Saturday night.
MVC (3-1), which opened its season March 19 with a loss to Aptos (3-0), closes its season Friday at Soquel (1-3) at 7:30 p.m.
MVC’s Aiden Keegan scored on an 80-yard hook-and-ladder play, Johnny Rodriquez scored on a 25-yard TD reception and Jonny Ledesma had a TD catch.
Senior Matt Vrechek scored the first touchdown of his career on a 2-yard for MVC. The play
was aptly named “The Vrechek Special” in the huddle.
“He really earned it,” Mustangs coach J.B. Williams said of the two-way lineman.
MVC’s Corydon Lindner scored on a 6-yard run.
Williams thanked St. Francis
for playing its scheduled home game on MVC’s campus.
“We always play each other pretty tough,” Williams said. “It’s great we could come together in the middle of April and have a game.”
St. Francis’ Garrett Lee produced the game’s first score on an 17-yard run. Teammate Davin Avila added a 6-yard TD run in the third quarter. Avila’s run was set up by a 44-yard reception by Lee.
Avila connected with Lee for a 35-yard TD pass in the final minute.
Riley Moller led the Mustangs in tackles, Williams said. Vrechek had a fumble recovery and Williams praised the play of defensive linemen Nate Fernandez, Aidan Williams and Gunner Gerhold.
At Scotts Valley 35, Harbor 0
SCOTTS VALLEY — The Falcons received touchdowns from two unexpected players Saturday and their defense posted their third shutout in five games to remain unbeaten in SCCAL play.
Junior lineman Matthew O’Brien-Roja scored his first career touchdown on a 5-yard run in the first half and sophomore running back Allan Aragon scored on a 10-yard run in the second half. It was the first touchdown of their football careers.
The Falcons also received a score from someone who frequently enters the end zone. Junior running back Isaiah Velez scored on a 28yard run, boosting his season touchdown total to 10 (nine on offense, one on defense).
Junior running back Brock Siechen scored on a 40-yard run and Brandon Wilson hauled in a twopoint conversion pass for a 20-0 lead at the half.
Quarterback Aiden Paul connected with Nick Erickson
for a 30-yard touchdown pass.
Lineman Andre Nice, who will likely play at Santa Barbara City College next season, recorded two sacks, giving him a school-record total of 11. He eclipsed Drake Smith’s total of 10 in 2010. One of Nice’s sacks came on a safety.
Austyn Crispell and Erickson also recorded sacks.
Falcons coach Louie Walters praised the efforts of Pirates quarterback Cash Rosburg, “I was impressed with the Harbor quarterback. He played well. He took some hits but hung in there.”
The Falcons (5-0, 4-0) close the season with a rematch
against St. Francis on Saturday at 2 p.m. Scotts Valley prevailed 12-0 in the teams’ season opener
March 11.
