PCS, MVC move into Mission 831 Basketball Shootout final

Four Pacific Collegiate School boys basketball players reached double digits in scoring, and the Pumas opened their season with a 66-55 win over Gonzales in the opening round of the Mission 831 Basketball Shootout at Monte Vista Christian School on Monday.

The Pumas made all 10 of their free-throw attempts in the second half and used a run in the fourth quarter to advance.

Senior Malachi Douyon, the MVP of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League’s B Division in the spring, led PCS with 20 points. Senior Andrew Hubbell scored 12 points and sophomores Elias Golino and Neel Yarlagadda each added 10 points.

The Pumas (1-0) were scheduled to play Monte Vista Christian (1-0) in the championsh­ip on Tuesday evening, after the Sentinel went to press.

Pajaro Valley (0-1) and Gonzales (0-1) were scheduled to play for third place.

Spectators for all the games at MVC on Tuesday were encouraged to bring a canned food donation.

AT MVC 64, PAJARO VALLEY 47>>

Luke Finney scored 17 points and was one of four Mustangs seniors to reach double digits in scoring in their season opening win at the Mission 831 Basketball Shootout on Monday.

Sean Bautista scored 12 points for the Mustangs, Ryan Cahalan scored 11 and Sammy Cater added 10.

Junior Jojo Keldsen had 10 rebounds for MVC and junior Jonny Ledesma had eight rebounds.

Girls basketball APTOS 58, OAK GROVE 44 >>

Jasmine Ackerman had 17 points and six rebounds and the Mariners won in the opening round of the Mission 831 Basketball Shootout at MVC on Monday.

Jaylen Dang scored 13 points for the Mariners and Grace Parry added 10 points.

The Mariners (1-0) were scheduled to play Palo Alto (1-0) in the championsh­ip Tuesday evening, after the Sentinel went to press.

PALO ALTO 69, AT MVC 21 >> Paloma Ramirez scored 14 points, but the Mustangs lost their opener in the Mission 831 Basketball Shootout at MVC on Monday.

Marissa Cortes added five points for MVC (0-1), which was scheduled to face Oak Grove (0-1) for third place Tuesday.

Vienn Sheng made four of Palo Alto 10 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. Jessica Fiske also scored 14 points and Nadiz Brown scored 13, with three 3s.

SAN LORENZO VALLEY 49, ST. FRANCIS 40 >> Junior Bella Reynolds led Cougars with 13 points, while sophomore Hannah Morley nearly netted a triple-double with 12 points, nine rebounds and eight steals Monday.

Cougars senior Abby Lahey scored nine points to go with 10 rebounds and junior Amelia Sizemore added eight points.

The Cougars led 12-11 after the first quarter, with St. Francis briefly taking the lead early in the second quarter. The Cougars regained the lead and never relinquish it. SLV took a 3024 lead into halftime.

SLV (1-0) returns to action with a home game against Monterey on Monday.

Boys soccer

AT WATSONVILL­E 3, MONTEREY 0 >> Senior Mateo Arias scored twice and classmate Isaac Vargas added a goal in the Wildcatz’s nonleague win Monday.

Sebastian Abonce had two assists for the Wildcatz (1-0), who host San Luis Obispo on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.

Junior goalie Jorge Magdaleno made three saves in the shutout.

Golf

PEBBLE BEACH INVITATION­AL >> Lafayette’s Brandon Harkins, a PGA Tour member, won the 50th annual TaylorMade Pebble Beach Invitation­al on Sunday.

Harkins finished with a 21-under 267 total at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Germany’s Alex Cejka and Harry Hall of Hayle, England, tied for second at 269.

San Jose’s Justin Suh (270) took fourth, and South San Francisco’s Isaiah Salinda and Austin Eckroat of Edmond, Oklahoma, tied for fifth at 274.

Santa Cruz native Juli Inkster, a Harbor High alumna, missed the cut.
