Giants get Rodón back in form, but can’t solve Padres’ Musgrove

- By Jerry McDonald

The good news for the Giants is that Carlos Rodón returned to form Saturday against the San Diego Padres.

The bad news is that Padres starter Joe Musgrove stayed right where he’s been all season.

Musgrove shut out the Giants for seven innings in a 2-1 win for San Diego in front of 38,916 fans at Oracle Park, running his record to 5-0. He got relief help from Robert Suárez in the eighth inning and Taylor Rogers in the ninth. Rogers, twin brother of the Giants’ Tyler Rogers, picked up his 16th save.

The Giants, third place in the National League West, fell to 2217 and hope to avert a sweep Sunday against San Diego, which is 2614 and behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.

Manny Machado hit a monster home run for San Diego, his ninth of the season, in the third inning off a 99-mile per hour fastball from Rodón.

Musgrove has pitched at least six innings in all eight of his starts for the Padres, and has pitched seven innings in three of his last four games. He gave up just four hits, walked three, struck out four and threw 100 pitches. The Giants didn’t score until Wilmer Flores, who started at designated hitter when Brandon Belt (right knee discomfort) was a late scratch, hit his fourth home run of the season against Suárez in the eighth inning with one out.

Rodón, coming off a nightmarish start in St. Louis where he gave up 10 hits and eight earned runs in 3 2/3 innings, re-established his power repertoire against the Padres. He gave up two runs in six innings, the solo home run to Machado in the third inning and a safety squeeze bunt to Trent Grisham in the sixth.

Removed in favor of Jarlín García in the seventh after throwing 100 pitches, Rodón walked four, struck out six and gave up five hits. A two-out error by Darin Ruf in the first inning — followed by a pair of walks and a fly out — cost him 13 pitches in the top of the first inning.
