SC’s Young begins 2nd-half push to crack WSL’s top 5
Santa Cruz surfer Nat Young, who survived the midseason cut on the World Surf League’s Championship Tour in his last event, continued his push to crack the top five in the rankings as the second half of the CT season kicked off Saturday.
Young, ranked No. 14 through five events, finished second in his Opening Round heat at the Quiksilver Pro G-Land in Banyuwangi, Indonesia.
Young produced the highest wave score (7.33) in his Opening Round heat, but his two-wave total of 11.66 placed him behind wildcard entry Rio Waida of Indonesia (11.83). No. 1 Filipe Toledo of Brazil (10.80) took third in the heat.
No. 14 Young faces fellow No. 14 Kolohe Andino of San Clemente in Heat 8 of the Elimination Round, where he’ll be joined by
Toledo, when action resumes. Waida advanced to the Round of 16.
MMA ROCKHOLD BOUT RESCHEDULED »
Former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold’s scheduled
fight against former middleweight title challenger Paulo Costa is being moved to Aug. 20, which is slated to be the promotion’s UFC 278 pay-per-view event, MMA reporter “The Schmo” reported.
Rockhold, a Santa Cruz
native and Soquel High alum, was initially scheduled to fight Costa at UFC 277. No reason was given for the rescheduling.

GOOCH OFFERED NEW CONTRACT » Sunderland has offered academy product Lynden Gooch, a former Soquel High talent, a new contract to remain on Wearside in the Championship next season, several publications reported. Terms of the deal were not released.
Gooch, an attacking midfielder, has played in 38 of the club’s 46 league games this season and has six assists.
