Swiatek finds focus in France amid 31-match run

PARIS » Top-ranked Iga Swiatek won her 31st consecutiv­e match and is into the fourth round at Roland Garros for the fourth time in four appearance­s with a sometimes-shaky 6-3, 7-5 victory over Danka Kovinic on Saturday.

Swiatek, the 2020 French Open champion, has now collected 48 of the past 49 sets she has played. Her winning streak is the longest in women’s tennis since Serena Williams won 34 in a row in 2013.

Swiatek improved her career record at the claycourt Grand Slam tournament to 17-2, a winning percentage of .895.

THOMPSON-HERAH EDGES RICHARDSON IN THE PREFONTAIN­E 100 » Olympic gold medalist Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica held off American Sha’Carri Richardson in the 100 meters at a rainy Prefontain­e Classic.

Thompson-Herah defended her Pre title in 10.79 seconds, in front of Richardson in 10.92.

Richardson became a sensation when she won at the U.S. Olympic trials last year but was denied a spot on the team for Tokyo because she tested positive for marijuana. She did not speak to reporters after the race, her first sub11 second mark since last year’s trials.

Scottie Scheffler Scheffler shot a 2-under 68 with wind gusts of around 30 mph and temperatur­es in the upper-90s at Colonial. His 11-under total was two strokes ahead of Brendon Todd, whose third-round 65 was bogey-free, and Scott Stallings (70).
