Watsonvill­e's Ibarra keeps mashing, wins league award

First baseman Ruben Ibarra, a Watsonvill­e native, continued his hot hitting for the Cincinnati Reds' Single-A affiliate in Daytona, Florida.

The former St. Francis High and San Jose State talent was 3-for-4 batting with a pair of home runs and five RBI in the Daytona Tortugas' 11-4 win over the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels on Sunday.

On Monday, he was named the Florida State League's Player of the Week. He led all of minor league baseball in slugging (1.200), on-base plus slugging (1.800), and total bases (24).

The 6-foot-5, 290-pound slugger is batting .583 (14 for 24) with five home runs and 10 RBI in June. On the season, he's hitting .286 (40 for 140) with seven home runs, 26 RBI, 21 runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.

Climbing

WORLD CUP BOULDERING >> Santa Cruz native Natalia Grossman won her fourth consecutiv­e Internatio­nal Federation of Sport Climbing World Cup gold medal in women's bouldering on her last attempt at Brixen, Italy, on Saturday.

The 20-year-old, who lives and trains in Salt Lake City, finished with four tops and four zones in six attempts.

“I'm really grateful and excited for more,” said Grossman, on the IFSC broadcast. “I feel like at least during the qualifiers and semis rounds, I had like the most fun I've had in a really long time and it felt good to compete without pressure again because in Salt Lake, I felt like I had a lot of pressure.

“Hannah definitely kept me on my toes the whole finals round, so that was kind of fun and dealing with the pressure, but I was glad I was able to keep it together.”

During her streak, she has also posted a pair of wins in Salt Lake City as well as one in Seoul, South Korea.

Germany's Hannah Meul earned silver and China's Luo Zhilu, making her world cup debut, earned bronze.

Running

PORTLAND TRACK FESTIVAL >> Scotts Valley native Vanessa Fraser took second place in the women's 5,000-meter high performanc­e race at the Portland Track Festival on Saturday.

Fraser, a former Stanford runner who competes for Nike Bowerman Track Club, finished in 15:05.04, which was under the 15:10 standard to qualify for the World Athletics Championsh­ips.

Weini Kelati of Under Armour/Dark Sky Distance won in 14:57.07. Sarah Inglis of Puma Elite Running was third in 15:05.51.

Aptos native Nikki Hiltz, running unattached, took 14th in the women's 1,500 in 4:08.54. Karissa Schweizer of Nike Bowerman Track Club won in a meet record 4:00.75. The previous best mark was 4:02.62.

Surfing

SURF CITY EL SALVADOR PRO

>> Santa Cruz's Nat Young and 23 others enjoyed a lay day as the competitio­n window for World Surf League's Surf City El Salvador Pro opened Saturday at Punta Roca in La Libertad, El Salvador.

Young, who is No. 16 on CT rankings, competes in Heat 4 of the Opening Round against No. 1 Filipe Toledo of Brazil and Bryan Perez of El Salvador when action begins.

The competitio­n window runs through June 20.
