Santa Cruz `TROUBLED WATERS' EXPLORES RACISM IN SURFING CULTURE
On Friday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the Museum of Art and History will host “Troubled Waters: The Ocean as Contested Space in Surf Culture.”
“Troubled Waters” is a presentation, Q&A, and community discussion about the prevalence of racism in surfing culture and how to influence that culture in a more inclusive direction. The event will be led by surfers and activists Esabella Bonner, founder of Black Surf Club Santa Cruz; Kayiita Johnson, founder of organization Black Surfers; anthropologist and historian Paul Richardson; and artist David “Dáithí' Crellin, creator of the Decolonize The Surf project. This event is free with museum admission. Admission is $10 for the general public and $8 for students, teachers and veterans. The MAH is located at 705 Front Street, Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz PUNK, GARAGE ROCK FIDLAR GETS READY TO ROCK THE CATALYST
On Friday the Catalyst will host punk and garage rock band FIDLAR.
FIDLAR is known for its short, frenetic songs, as well as its rise to fame on the internet. The latter garnered the band an award for the Best Web-Born Artists from O Music Awards. The band also received the award of Best Live Act from the AIM Independent Music Awards.

Santa Cruz KANDACE SPRINGS HONORS INSPIRATIONS IN TRIBUTE ALBUM
On Friday at 7 p.m., jazz and soul singer/pianist Kandace Springs will perform her latest album
“The Women Who Raised Me” at Kuumbwa Jazz.
Springs considers the album her most personal yet. The album is inspired by and a tribute to the female singers that inspired Springs, from classics like Billie Holiday to modern artists like Lauryn Hill. Tickets range from $26.25 to $52.50. Santa Cruz A DIASPORA JOURNEY EXPLORES TRADITION OF AFRICAN DIASPORA
On Monday at 7 p.m., flutist, vocalist and composer Elena Pinderhughes and guitarist Lionel Loueke will debut their five-part musical suite “A Diaspora Journey.” The next day, Tuesday at 6 p.m., Pinderhughes will discuss the suite with Thomas Sage Penderson of the Speak for Change podcast.
Sponsored by the SCC Black Health Matters Initiative and commissioned by Kuumbwa Jazz, Pinderhughes (along with collaborator Loueke) created the suite as an exploration of the myriad musical traditions of the African Diaspora. The music highlights the comfort and strength black people all over the world have drawn from musical traditions.

MAH LECTURE EXPLORES USE OF TRADITIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL KNOWLEDGE
On Feb. 22, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the Museum of Art and History will host a History Forum focused on “Restoring Indigenous Traditional Environmental Knowledge to the Northern Monterey Bay Region.”
A number of Indigenous communities managed the land's natural resources through Traditional Environmental Knowledge, a resource that made the land abundant but was historically disregarded. Today, Traditional Environmental Knowledge sees renewed use and engagement in partnerships between Indigenous communities and
organizations such as California State Parks, as expert archaeologist Mark Hylkema will discuss in this lecture. History Forum is an annual speaker series that provides History Forum members with lectures from the top historians and authors of Santa Cruz county.

Aptos SUPPORT APTOS HISTORY MUSEUM AT INVENTIVE FUNDRAISER
On Tuesday from 5-7p.m., the Aptos History Museum will be hosting a Mardi Gras celebration as a fundraiser
for the museum.
The Mardi Gras celebration will include a costume contest, a silent auction, the special presentation “How Storms Created Seacliff and Cement Ship,” a raffle by the Friends of SC State Parks, and more. Live music will be provided by Soquel High's jazz band and appetizers and a bar will be available. Attendance for this event is $40 for the general public and $35 for members.
