UCSC's Murphy repeats as All-American

UC Santa Cruz senior forward Kaylee Murphy was named an NCAA Division III Honorable Mention All-American by the Women's Basketball Coaches Associatio­n on Thursday.

It's the second-straight year Murphy has earned the accolade from the WBCA. She is the first All-American in program history.

Murphy averaged 12.4 points 11.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists for the Banana Slugs (17-7) this season. She became the first player in UCSC history — male or female — to attain 1,000 career rebounds. Her 17 double-doubles was 12th in the nation and she was 30th in rebounds per game. She also became the school's career assist leader with 317 and finished her career fourth on the school's career scoring list with 1,168 points.

Boys golf HARBOR 209, SCOTTS VALLEY 259 >>

Matthew Munro shot 3-overpar 37 on the front nine at DeLaveaga Golf Course to secure medalist honors and lead the Pirates to the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League win Thursday. He had a birdie on No. 9.

Ian Holbert (39), Jason Tucker (41), Nash Campbell (44) and Niko Marinovich (48) also scored for the Pirates.

Carter Ziep (48), Will Jackson (51), Jason Dodrill (51), Cole Leonard (55), and Jake Hipwell (54) scored for the Falcons.

On Monday at 4 p.m., Harbor (2-0) plays Aptos at Seascape Golf Club, while Scotts Valley (0-1) plays San Lorenzo Valley at Delaveaga.

APTOS 207, SOQUEL 273 >> Luke Garvey shot 40 over nine holes at Seascape to secure medalist honors on Thursday, and lead the Mariners to the SCCAL win.

Tyler Grosdidier (41), Shawn Roschelle (41), Ben Nowark (41) and Justin Rifkind (44) also scored for the Mariners.

Luke English (44), Cole Johnson (49), Ryan Niizawa (55), Tyler Smith (62), and Cameron Jones (63) scored for the Knights.

College baseball AT CABRILLO 17, MONTEREY PENINSULA 13 >>

First baseman Matt Morrison had three hits, two doubles and a home run, six RBI, and scored three runs to lead the Seahawks to a zany win in Coast Conference South Division action Thursday.

Cabrillo trailed 2-0 in the first inning, led 10-2 through five innings, and trailed 13-10 after giving up a nine runs in the eighth inning, only to take the lead for good with its seven-run eighth.

Seita Shiratori had two hits, three RBI, and scored a run for Cabrillo. Leadoff hitter Lucas Rexin had three hits, two RBI, and two runs scored. Kawana Soares had two hits and scored four runs, and Matt Lawton had two hits and scored three runs.

Reliever Daniel Madrigal earned the win despite giving up three runs in 1 2/3 innings, and Lobos reliever Rowan Trosky took the loss.

Cabrillo (10-11, 2-0) plays at MPC (9-11, 0-2) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

High school softball APTOS 15, AT SANTA CRUZ 2; 5 INN. >>

Bailey Fulton had four hits, two RBI, and scored three runs in the Mariners' SCCAL win Thursday, which was called in the fifth inning on the mercy rule.

Kailani Aguayo had three hits, two RBI, and scored twice for Aptos. Jewels Chavez had two hits, three RBI, and scored a run, and Mileena Carbajal had a hit, two walks, and two RBI.

High school baseball ST. FRANCIS 19, AT CARMEL 6>>

Kyle Dyer had three hits, including a pair of home runs, and five RBI, as the Sharks won their Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division game Thursday.

Junior Ibarra doubled, homered, had a pair of RBI, and scored four runs, and Mateo Rigor had three hits and five RBI.

Pitcher Trey Silva earned the win.

The teams play again at Carmel on Friday at 4 p.m.

MVC 5, AT ALISAL 2 >> Senior Joseph Keldsen had four hits, a RBI, and run scored to help the Mustangs win their PCAL Mission Division game Thursday.

Luke Lange had a double and two RBI for the Mustangs (4-1, 1-0), who host Lynbrook in a nonleague game Saturday at noon.

WATSONVILL­E 10, ALVAREZ 2 >>

Aiden Rodriguez had two hits and three RBI in the Wildcatz's PCAL Mission Division win Thursday.

Zander Miller-Brown had two hits, an RBI, and scored twice for Watsonvill­e (3-1, 2-0). Miguel Lopez had two hits and an RBI, Rudolph Valdez had an RBI and scored twice, Abraham Bonilla had two walks and scored twice, and Mateo Lopez had a walk and scored twice.

Winning pitcher Abraham Bonilla gave up one run and four hits over five innings.

Jayden Valero had four hits and scored four runs to help the Spartans knock off the Grizzlies in their five inning game, which was called early on the mercy rule Thursday.

HARBOR 3, SOQUEL 0 >> Junior pin hitter Gryphon Butler had 22 kills and 12 digs in the Pirates' 25-15, 25-14, 25-20 SCCAL sweep Thursday.

Sophomore libero Abe Schmidt and freshman Josh Rejfir each had 12 digs and three aces for Harbor (5-5, 2-0), which plays at Aptos on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

AT PACIFIC COLLEGIATE 3, PALMA 0 >> Outside hitters Xander Coomes, Finn Pommerenke and Nolan Crane led the Pumas' attack in their 25-15, 25-19, 25-16 PCAL Gabilan Division sweep Thursday.

The Pumas (2-1, 2-0) host Salinas on Monday at 6 p.m.

SANTA CRUZ 3, AT SCOTTS VALLEY 0 >>

The Cardinals earned a tightly contested 25-23, 25-21, 25-20 sweep in SCCAL action Thursday.

Senior outside hitter Ladreal Wallwork had nine kills and three blocks for the Falcons (2-1, 0-1), and junior middle hitter Chase Welle tallied four blocks.

Boys track and field AT SOQUEL 92, SLV 25, ST. ABRAHAM'S CLASSICAL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 5 >>

Junior Braylon Noble broke Soquel's record in the high jump (6-3), and he also won the 300 hurdles (43.10) to help the Knights win their SCCAL meet Thursday. John Tobin set the previous high jump mark of 6-1 in 2012.

Other Knights winners include junior Jordan McCord in the 100 (11.65), senior Brody Staley in the 200 (23.07), sophomore Tomas Church in the 1,600 (4:58.77), senior Jakob Sporleder in the shot put (33-11), junior Conor Shields in the discus (98-3), senior David Welch in the pole vault (11-0), and freshman Jack Cash won the triple jump (31-5).

Cougars winners include sophomore Grant Davis in the 800 (2:33.51), junior Joshua Gabrielson in the 110 hurdles (17.48), and senior Arden Unger in the long jump (18-9.5).

Seniors Tosh Woods and Rylan Sampson, and junior Eddie Lira each won two individual events in the SCCAL meet Thursday.

Woods won the high jump (5-6) and long jump (20-0), Sampson won the pole vault (14-0) and triple jump (39-0), and Lira won

the 110 hurdles (19.49) and 300 hurdles (47.32).

Other Mariners individual winners include junior Joseph McGibben in the 100 (11.62), freshman Brady Bliesner in the 400 (54.72), sophomore Colin Dagnall in the 3,200 (12:16.51), freshman Bryce Hoops in the 10-pound shot put (30-5.5), and junior Zander Watson in the discus (112-4).

Cardinals winners include senior Vincent Bottini in the 200 (23.84), sophomore Eli FitchenYou­ng in the 800 (2:00.94), senior Jim Ratliff in the 1,600 (4:40.63), and senior Franz Pohlmann won the 12-pound shot put (40-1).

Wildcatz senior Adan Rivas, junior Ruben Mora, and sophomore Nathaniel Aceves-Aguilar each won two individual events in the PCAL meet Thursday.

Rivas won the 100 (11.68) and 200 (24.24), Mora won the 110 hurdles (19.13) and 300 hurdles (43.92), and Aceves-Aguilar won the high jump (5-4) and triple jump (36-10.5).

Other Wildcatz individual winners included senior Freddy Lopez in the 800 (2:17.93), sophomore Rodrigo Barranco in the 1,600 (4:56.68), freshman Desi Salinas-Holz in the 3,200 (11:30.03), senior Tajin Olivas in the long jump (19-7), junior David RochaVarga­s in the discus (1198), and junior Jovani Guerrero in the pole vault (9-6)

Girls track and field AT SOQUEL 80, SAN LORENZO VALLEY 52, ST. ABRAHAM'S 1 >>

Senior Lily Thayer and junior Jonelle Scott each won two individual events to help the Knights win their SCCAL meet Thursday.

Thayer won the shot put (29-0) and discus (695), and Scott won the 100 (13.16) and pole vault (100). Junior Nola Salazar won the 3,200 13:20.27) for the Knights, and junior Charlotte Bacum won the triple jump (27-7.25).

The Cougars had three individual double winners: Sophomore Naomi Seastrom won the 100 hurdles (19.22) and 300 hurdles (52.68), senior Colleen Murata won the 800 (2:26.62) and 1,600 (5:25.63), and senior Mia Hamilton won the 200 (28.33) and long jump (16-1.5).

Senior Kaitlin Seigle won the 400 (1:00.39) for the Cougars, and sophomore Orea Pollock won the high jump (4-8).

Junior Ella Shoemaker won the 100 hurdles (16.92), 300 hurdles (48.30) and long jump (15-9), as the Mariners won the SCCAL meet Thursday.

Other Mariners individual winners include junior Ava Churchill in the 400 (1:02.01), junior Rachel Hoops in the 1,600 (5:32.75), senior Brooke Willoughby in the 3,200 (12:30.41), senior Mikayla Santaella in the shot put (26-8.75), junior Tiana Smith in the discus (83-2), and freshman Kenzie Smith in the triple jump (31-6.5).

Cardinals senior Gretta Cavazzutti won the 100 (13.08) and 200 (26.25), freshman Chloe Hood won the 800 (2:35.77), senior Clare Byram won the high jump (4-10), and sophomore Meilia Nee won the pole vault (9-6).

AT WATSONVILL­E 81, NORTH SALINAS 41 >>

Wildcatz seniors Edith Rodriguez, Dahlia Barranco, and Kassandra Hernandez each won two individual events in the PCAL meet Thursday.

Rodriguez won the 200 (29.42) and 400 (2:32.03), Barranco won the 800 (2:32.03) and 1,600 (5:29.0), and Hernandez won the 100 hurdles (17.79) and 300 hurdles (53.56).

Watsonvill­e sophomore Katelynn Ruiz won the 3,200 (12:08.73) and junior Evangelina Gaona won the triple jump (29-7).

Boys tennis

AT SCOTTS VALLEY 7, SLV 0 >> The Falcons won five matches in straight sets, and the Cougars forfeited No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles in SCCAL play Thursday.

In singles action, junior James Delaney defeated Jonah Westberg 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, junior Henry Spitzer defeated Dylan Konegberg 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2, and junior Marshall Dodge defeated Brody Ceresa 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.

In doubles action, the freshmen duo of Dylan Moore and Elijah Diamond defeated August Hughes and Asher Schwarzbac­h 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and juniors Jules Dudek and Wesley Theissen beat Cameron Shiner and Francisco Rocha 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.

Scotts Valley (1-1) hosts Aptos (4-0, 3-0) on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m., weather permitting.

SANTA CRUZ 7, AT HARBOR 0 >>

Will Sommer, Julian Arulananth­am, Sammy Lambert and Max Schumaker won matches in straight sets, and the Cardinals (20) rolled to the SCCAL win Thursday.'

Sommer knocked off Daniel Rintoul 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Lambert beat Angel Munoz 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. Arulananth­am and Schumaker didn't drop a game at No. 2 and 3 singles, respective­ly.

Kai Sheehan and Aidan Cromarty won in straight sets at No. 1 doubles, and Lucas Guzman and Jun Shi won 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 over Daniel Elliot and Leo Barrientos-Castillo at No. 2 doubles. The Pirates (0-2) forfeited at No. 3 doubles.

APTOS 6, SOQUEL 1 >> Koosha Safari, John McGowan, and Jack Eldredge won singles matches in straight sets, and the Mariners swept doubles action in their SCCAL win Thursday.

John Spencer and Nick Hambright, and Jack Taylor and Patrick Morrissey won their doubles matches in straight sets. The Knights forfeited at No. 3 doubles.
