`THE HUNCHBACK' PREMIERES

-

Juan Castro stars as Quasimodo in the Cabrillo Stage production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” which previews Thursday, July 6 at 7:30 p.m., at discounted ticket prices, with opening night on Friday. Victor Hugo's timeless novel comes roaring to life in this brilliant adaptation showcasing the Disney animated film's Academy Award-nominated score, as well as new songs by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. On a spectacular set that cleverly transforms the stage from scenes on the streets of 15th-century Paris to the expansive inner sanctum of the cathedral, the musical begins as the bells of Notre Dame sound and a full choir sings. The bell ringer, Quasimodo, observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Convinced by his uncle and caretaker archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo that he must stay hidden because of his physical appearance, Quasimodo longs to experience life out in the world. Defying his uncle, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the compassionate and brave Romani dancer, Esmeralda. A sweeping score and powerful story make “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” an instant classic. Cabrillo Stage is dedicated to presenting high-caliber, large-scale productions that allow professional and non-professional artists to work alongside each other in the creation of musicals with Broadway-level production values. “The Hunchback of Notre Dame runs from July 6 to July 30 in the Crocker Theater on the Cabrillo College campus, with evening and matinee performances.
