Scotts Valley breaks school, meet records at Firebird Relays

Scotts Valley High's girls track and field team won three races, one in record fashion, and posted topfive finishes in four events at the Firebird Relays at Fremont High in Sunnyvale on Saturday.

Juniors Soraya Westlund, Sarah Drees, and Rayne Leonetti, and sophomore Ava Decleve took first place in the 800-meter sprint medley relay, which features 100, 100, 200, and 400 legs, in 1 minute, 50.45 seconds.

Their finishing time broke the meet record of 1:53.42, which was set by Lynbrook in 2019, and Scotts Valley's previous school record of 1:55.10, which was set in 2015.

Stanford University committed senior Ashlyn Boothby took first out of 24 runners in the 1,600 in 5:12.45, the eighth fastest mark in the Central Coast Section this season.

Junior Violet McCutchen and sophomores Jenni Brownfield, Dylan Turzak and Decleve took first in the 4×800 relay (10:20.38), the eighth-best time in the CCS this season. (The Falcons also have the thirdfaste­st mark in the section with Brownfield and Decleve joining Diana Alivov and Boothby for a 9:49.70 finish at the Willow Glen Invitation­al on March 9.)

Westlund, Drees, sophomore Lily Rittenhous­e, and Leonetti took third in the 4×100 relay (53.52).

The Falcons (36 points) took eighth place out of 24 teams. Monta Vista (93) of Cupertino won the team title. Fremont (74) took second, and Cupertino (71) was third.

Boys

FIREBIRD RELAYS >> Senior Ben George was part of a pair of wins, and the Scotts Valley produced three topfive finishes at the Firebird Relays at Fremont High in Sunnyvale on Saturday.

George took first out of 39 runners in the 800 (1:59.19). He also teamed with seniors Mason Lantz and Samuel Abel, and junior Ian Jory for first in the 4×400 relay (3:37.66)

Lantz also took fourth in the 400 (51.55).

Scotts Valley (25 points) took 11th out of 26 teams. Westmoor (95.5) of Daly City won the title, San Mateo (89) took second, and Leigh (88) of San Jose was third.

LYNBROOK INVITATION­AL >> Santa Cruz junior Eli Fitchen-Young took second

in the 1,600 to Sacred Heart Cathedral junior Miles Cook at the 20-team Lynbrook Invitation­al in San Jose on Saturday.

Fitchen-Young finished in 4:17.23, Cook won in 4:13.54, and Cardinals senior Kees Van der meer took fourth in 4:30.43.

Cook's winning time edged Fitchen-Young's 4:13.55 finish at the Dublin Distance Fiesta last week as the second fastest time in the CCS this season. Pioneer junior Carson Hedlund

(4:12.89) set the top mark this season at the Dublin Distance Fiesta.

Pacific Collegiate senior Andre Tse took fourth in the discus (129-6).

NBA G League

GREEN SIGNS 10-DAY CONTRACT >> The Chicago Bulls signed Santa Cruz Warriors guard Javonte Green to a 10-day contract Saturday.

Green, 30, averaged 12.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 22.2 minutes in 10 games for the Warriors this season.

Unselected in the 2015 NBA draft, Green spent four years playing profession­ally overseas before he signed with the Boston Celtics in 2019. Green has appeared in 186 NBA games with two teams (Boston and Chicago).
