Author takes readers to Asgard at event
Marvel Comics may not have invented Thor, Loki, Odin or the land of Asgard, but it — along with the many movies featuring these characters over the past 13 years — has made these classic figures of Norse mythology household names among those who may not have otherwise studied these myths.
Marvel is not alone in trying to spark an interest in the Nordic legends. Author George O'Connor is seeking to do the same with his new graphic novel series “Asgardians.” His first installment on Odin is now on bookshelves, and Bookshop Santa Cruz will host an author event Thursday — Thor's Day, if you will.
In addition to picture books like “If I Had a Triceratops” and “Kapok!” as well as the graphic novel “Journey into Mohawk Country,” O'Connor is also the author of the “Olympians” series, which told the stories of Greek gods such as Zeus, Athena, Poseidon, Hera, Apollo and more with illustrations bringing these legends to life. Now he has launched a new saga about the Norse gods, with Odin starring in the first installment. The commander of the Aesir tribe, Odin was known for his wisdom and being the god of war and death as well as the father of Thor and Baldr. The book tells the story of Odin with kinetic illustrations accentuating the gritty realities of war.
The event is 5 p.m. Thursday at Bookshop Santa Cruz, 1520 Pacific Ave. The event is free, but registration is encouraged so bookshop staff can plan for how many will attend and provide updates on any changes.
