North­ern New Mex­ico has a his­tory of moviemak­ing go­ing back to 1914. Well- known pro­duc­tions filmed in the Santa Fe area in­clude: A Mil­lion Ways to Die in the West, Wild Hogs, Lone Ranger, North Coun­try, Border­town, In­de­pen­dence Day, Nat­u­ral Born Killers and City Slick­ers. The pop­u­lar Ter­mi­na­tor Sal­va­tion was re­leased in 2009, and True Grit, nom­i­nated for an Os­car award for Best Pic­ture, was com­pleted in 2010. TV se­ries in­clud­ing Man­hat­tan, Long­mire and Break­ing Bad have also been filmed in the area. Three com­plete movie sets in the Santa Fe area are avail­able for moviemak­ers, com­mer­cial shoots, new me­dia and video pro­duc­tions of all types, and a film stu­dio com­plex, Santa Fe Stu­dios, opened its doors in 2011.
