YOGA and MEDITATION

-

With 400 poses and many choices for a daily plan reminder and soothing music, the free version of Daily Yoga can help you learn some basic yoga moves

sessions that last from two minutes to an hour. (Android, iOS 8.0 or later) Calm is a free app designed to help you “be here now” with guided mindfulness and meditation. Featured in The New York Times and Lifehacker, this app lets you choose a calming scene and sound, like rain falling on leaves or ocean waves rolling onto a beach, then guides you in breathing in and out for at least two minutes. Choose a meditation program that helps you sleep, deepen a state of mindfulness and build a sense of gratitude. One drawback: There is no pause button. You have to click out of the app to stop it. (iOS 7.0 or later) and keep you practicing this ancient art of well-being. Highdef videos guide you through yoga moves designed specifically for people who seek flexibility, better sleep, exercises that are appropriate during pregnancy and solutions to office stress (yes, you can do these right at your desk). The app offers unlimited access to all the yoga programs for $4.49 per month or a one-time $99 lifetime plan. (Android, iOS)

Salute the Desk is another yoga and stretching app designed for those of us who are chained, at least figuratively, to our desks. Studies now show that sitting for long stretches is detrimental to our bodies. But many of us feel we have no choice. So along with getting up every hour or so to go get a drink of water, take a few minutes to try a few of these 27 yoga moves at your desk with the app to guide you. This one isn’t free, but for a one-time fee of $2.99, it could be worth the investment. (iOS 6.0 or later)

Developers of Headspace compare it to a gym membership for your mind. It offers mindfulness and meditation sessions designed to help reduce stress, boost creativity, calm anxiety and strengthen relationships. Free 10-minute sessions are available for cell phones, tablets or laptops through the app store and Google Play or Amazon. Subscribers can access guided and unguided meditation and mindfulness
