Santa Fe New Mexican

The past 100 years

-

From The Santa Fe New Mexican: July 26, 1916: A tract of 12,688 acres in Guadalupe County, which for more than twelve years has been a “no man’s land,” so far as county jurisdiction is concerned, was recently discovered by Byron O. Beall, special agent of the state tax commission, in making a check of lands in that county. The land is included in the big Bell Rranch of the Red River Valley’s company, but since the formation of Leonard Wood county, now Guadalupe, it has had no existence in county records, the county boundaries having been described in such a manner as to leave out this tract completely.

Taxes against the land in question will now by assessed by Guadalupe county for the last 12 years, and it is understood that the Red River company will contest the payment on the ground that there was absolutely no county jurisdiction during that period.

July 26, 1966: ALBUQUERQUE — Gubernatorial candidates Gene Lusk and Dave Cargo parried and thrust in the first television “debate” of the New Mexico political campaign Monday night in Albuquerque — but neither scored a clear victory.

In one of the most significant statements of the debate, Lusk replied to Cargo’s attacks on the former Eddy County senator’s voting record by admitting that he had been wrong. Lusk asserted that his vote for the lien law and the final responsibility law were due to “political immaturity.”

July 26, 1991: The principal of El Dorado Elementary School and nearly a third of its teachers are leaving, making the traditional problem of turnover at the school even worse.

“I’m interviewing and hiring and replacing as quick as I can,” said Principal Al Garcia, who is retiring after 20 years with the Santa Fe Public Schools district, including 11 years at El Dorado. He plans to join the Peace Corps. Garcia’s last day at the school is Sept. 15.
