Holmes’ bout may be his last before hiatus

- By James Barron

Brandon Holmes will headline another fight card this month, but could it be the last time he does it for a while?

Holmes will share the spotlight with Española’s Antonio Martinez as the co-main events for the “Cold War III” fight card at Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino on Jan. 28. Holmes’ opponent has yet to be confirmed, although Pat Holmes Sr., Brandon’s father, trainer and manager, said he is negotiating with El Paso’s Juan Carlos Guillen to fight his son.

However, Holmes Sr. said Brandon might not be on the next fight card scheduled for late April because he is trying to establish his own style salon with his grandmother. Brandon Holmes took time off in 2014 to get his cosmetology license and is a barber in Santa Fe.

“He’s in a position where he’s trying to get a business on his own,” Holmes Sr. said. “He’s ben cutting hair, but he’s establishing himself now. So it might be where he might take a break again.”

Regardless of Brandon Holmes’ boxing future, his father knows he is still putting in the time and effort in the ring to be ready for this fight. However, Brandon will fight at 130 pounds as opposed to the 125 he has been at for the past couple of years.

“He’s a sharper fighter,” Holmes Sr. said. “Every time he goes back in the ring, he learns something. Right now, his weight has changed. Where he was fighting at 122 pounds, now he’ll be at 130. So, his body is changing, but as far as his skill, he is trying to step up and handle that. And Brandon is one of those guys who does that.”

As for the rest of the seven-fight card, Martinez will take on Miguel Gloria, a 31-year old fighter out of Albuquerque who fought Pat Holmes Jr. last January. The younger Holmes beat Gloria in a six-round decision. Aaron Martinez, of the Santo Domingo Pueblo, will take on Albuquerque’s Alex Holguin, who has fought on several cards for Holmes Sr.

Matthew Griego, a highly touted fighter out of Albuquerque who is 6-0 in his career, is scheduled to take on Alejandro Moreno from Juarez, Mexico. Meanwhile, Rio Rancho’s Bryant McClain will fight Albuquerque’s Jordan Gregory in another bout.
