STUDY SESSION ON DISTRICT BUDGET MONDAY

Santa Fe Public Schools Board of Education will meet at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, in a study session designed to discuss how potential state budget cuts made during this year’s 60-day legislativ­e session will impact the district’s budget, which is around $103 million. The meeting, which is open to the public, takes place at the district’s Educationa­l Services Center, 610 Alta Vista St.

LEARN MORE ABOUT NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL

Marc Du Charme, current principal of De Vargas Middle School and future principal of Milagro Middle School, which will open in the summer of 2018, will hold an informal “drop in” session for parents and students who want to learn more about the new school. The event takes place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, at Capshaw Middle School, 351 W. Zia Road. Milagro will be located on the De Vargas campus on Llano Street.

CHORAL STUDENTS PARTICIPAT­E IN ASSESSMENT

Choral ensembles from Santa Fe’s middle schools, K-8 schools and Capital and Santa Fe high schools will participat­e in a yearly academic performanc­e assessment, alongside students from schools and districts throughout the north central region of the state, on March 1 and 2. Students and teachers work together to create their finest performanc­e and are rated by external adjudicato­rs. A rating of superior or excellent qualifies groups to participat­e in the yearly New Mexico Activities Associatio­n Choral Competitio­n. These performanc­es are free and open to the public and will be held at the Duane W. Smith Auditorium at Los Alamos High School, 1300 Diamond Drive, Los Alamos.

APPLY TO SCRUB CLUB

Students interested in applying to Capital High School’s summer Scrub Club can start applying in March. The Scrub Club is a STEAM (science, technology, engineerin­g, art and math) health care program that runs from May 30 through June 16 and serves students in grades four through eight enrolled in Santa Fe Public Schools. In this threeweek, hands-on intensive program, students learn the basics of microscope work, dissection, research, collection and analysis of data using computer technology.

Scrub Club is hosted by the Medical Science Academy at Capital High School. Free breakfast and lunch will be provided to all students in program. Returning Students should apply in Room 103 of the Capital High School campus on Paseo del Sur from 5 to 7 p.m. on March 7, 9, 14 or 15. New students must apply at the same locale on March 28 or 29 or April 11 or April 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. The registrati­on fee is $35 per student. POETRY OUT LOUD FINALS

The state’s Poetry Out Loud finals take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 12, at St. Francis Auditorium in the New Mexico Museum of Art, 107 W. Palace Ave. Over 1,200 students participat­ed at the classroom level across the state before judges chose eight finalists for the state championsh­ip. The March 12 event is free and open to the public, though seating is limited.

Finalists hail from Bosque School, Highland High School, the Public Academy for Performing Arts and La Cueva High School in Albuquerqu­e, Carlsbad High School, the Maxwell Schools, Oñate High School in Las Cruces and Taos High School.

The state winner gets $200 and his or her school library gets $500 to buy poetry books. The state winner receives an all-expense trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national finals, and the national champion receives $20,000.
