had eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

Finishing with five points apiece were TJ Sanchez, Matt Smith and Seth Arroyos.

Aaron Garcia had six of his seven points in the first quarter, a period that was downright miserable for Gallup. The Bengals missed all 10 of their shots, were outrebounded 11-4 and they committed eight turnovers. Capital led 12-0 after eight minutes, a score that could have been much worse had the Jaguars not turned it over seven times themselves.

Troy Etsitty had 14 points to lead Gallup while John had 11. The Bengals (11-17) did rebound to shoot 45 percent (17 of 38) from the field, but the turnovers were simply too much to overcome.

GAME NOTES

Not to form: Española’s loss wasn’t the only one featuring a lower seed to get an openinground win. Ninth-seeded Kirtland Central went on the road to score a mild upset over No. 8 Artesia.

Another near-upset was No. 1 Roswell needing a second half rally to get past No. 16 Bloomfield by five at home.

“You can’t overlook anybody,” Brooks said. “Not now.”

A double-digit seed advanced in five of the state’s six classifications, the lowest being No. 13 Del Norte’s win over Española. The lone exception was Class 2A where all eight of the top seeds moved on.
