From The Santa Fe New Mexican: March 22, 1917: WASHINGTON, D.C. — Offers of mediation to prevent actual war between the United States and Germany are expected among the next developments.

Administration officials heard today that a European neutral was contemplating such a plan and they frankly regarded it as another effort, backed by Germany, to divide sentiment in congress and embarrass the president. It was declared authoritatively that no proposals of mediation or for discussion would be considered unless Germany first abandons the campaign of ruthlessness.

March 22, 1967: A three-time Academy Award winner and the author of the prize-winning western novel, “Shane,” have joined Gov. David F. Cargo’s “movie scouts” to promote motion picture and television production in New Mexico.

The Academy Award winner is Charles La Maire of Santa Fe, Cargo said. The author is Jack Schaefer of Santa Fe.

Cargo said the two are to meet with other “movie scouts” today in Albuquerque to design and produce a brochure listing good movie locations and other information about New Mexico.

March 22, 1992: These days, Keith Metcalf eyes the sky and his irrigation ditch with apprehension.

The heavier-than-usual snowpack in the towering Truchas Peaks and the Borrego Mesa above his home will melt within the next two months, sending torrents of water into the valley below. Up to a certain point, that water will be greeted with pleasure, even prayers of thanksgiving. Fields and pastures will be green through the summer.

Once past that point, however, the water will be a threat. Rivers and reservoirs will swell, threatening to damage irrigation structures and ditches — the lifelines of northern New Mexico.
