Santa Fe New Mexican

The past 100 years

From The Santa Fe New Mexican: March 29, 1917: Two thousand acres of the dry farming land of the Wilson Land & Grain company in eastern Mora county, will be planted in pinto beans this year, according to C.A. Sawyer, of Arcade, N.Y., secretary of the company, and O.J. Mack, of Mills, N.M., the company’s New Mexico superintendent, who are in Santa Fe today. The bean acreage will be the largest under single ownership in the state.

March 29, 1967: The meeting scheduled last night between State Highway Department officials and the San Ildefonso Pueblo Council to discuss right of way for New Mexico 30 was postponed because of a crowded council agenda. The session has been rescheduled for next Tuesday, April 4.

March 29, 1992: The size of an upscale development adjacent to the traditional farming village of La Cienega has been substantially reduced — and that move has eased some concerns about the project’s impact on groundwater supplies. But the mayordomo of a local irrigation ditch still objects to one aspect of the new plan for La Cienega de Santa Fe. He said moving the well that will provide water to the development will reduce the flow from springs that help fill the irrigation ditch.

Plans originally called for La Cienega de Santa Fe to be served by an onsite well, but now the developer hopes to pump water to the project from a well at The Downs at Santa Fe.
