In 1998, 20-year-old Matthew Shepard was brutally beaten, tied to a fence and left to die in Laramie, Wyo. The death of this young gay man triggered the beginning of the social outcry. The killers were sentenced to two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. The Laramie Project chronicled events leading up to the crime, the murder itself, the investigation, the trial and the effect all of this had on the community. Ten years later, some of the same writers returned to Laramie and witnessed a community still emotionally divided. Setting the sequel apart from the first play are extensive prison interviews with both killers. Tickets at the door are $10 for adults and $5 for students. The play is dedicated to the memory of Anton Gress, who starred in Desert Academy’s 2009 production. Gress died in a crash last year. This production contains some language and themes that might not be appropriate for young children.
