Education standouts

-

Santa Fe Public Schools and three other school districts in New Mexico are being recognized by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation as Best Communities for Music Education.

The awards program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of the curriculum. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education.

The NAMM Foundation designated 527 of the nation’s 13,515 school districts this year as Best Communities for Music Education and 92 individual schools as Support Music Merit Award winners. These districts and schools set the bar in offering students access to comprehensive music education.

The other New Mexico school districts being awarded the 2017 BCME designation are: Albuquerque Public Schools; Cloudcroft Municipal Schools; and Farmington Municipal Schools.

Two New Mexico Highlands University graduates will follow their dreams at A.T. Still University of Health Sciences medical programs in Mesa, Ariz.

Molly Enenbach, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 2016, was accepted to the School of Osteopathic Medicine at A.T. Still, and Jivomir Siarov, with a bachelor’s degree in pre-professional allied health, was accepted to the Doctor of Physical Therapy program. They begin their A.T. Still studies in July.

Enenbach was named Student of the Year at Highlands in 2016 and was the university’s Achieving in Research Math and Science scholar. She led the Cowgirl soccer team as captain for three years, winning RMAC First Team All Conference Academic Honors twice.

She also completed a summer research internship at the University of Colorado-Boulder’s Nanofabrication Laboratory that focused on fabricating test samples using 3-D super-resolution microscopy.

Enenbach founded the International Service Group at Highlands and was its first president. She was the lead organizer for the group’s medical delegation to La Antigua, Guatemala, in May 2016.

Siarov, 25, a native of Bulgaria, is interested in pursuing geriatric neurological rehabilitation as a physical therapy specialty. He is working as a physical therapy technician at a clinic in San Diego, where he is gaining experience working primarily with Parkinson’s patients.
