Lady Jaguars hammer Academy

- By James Barron

Three days after the disappointment of a District 2-5A loss to Española Valley, the Capital Lady Jaguars showed gumption Saturday afternoon.

Once again showing the offensive punch that makes them one of the best-hitting teams in Class 5A, the Lady Jaguars pounded out 36 hits against Albuquerque Academy to fashion a district doubleheader sweep at home by 14-4 and 17-7 counts. Thanks to a doubleheader split between Los Alamos and the Lady Sundevils, Capital (10-7 overall) finds itself tied for first place in 2-5A at 4-1 with the Lady Hilltoppers, a half-game ahead of Española.

Capital rebounded from a 16-5 loss at home in which the Lady Sundevils scored 10 runs in the fifth inning to break open the game.

The hitting display got off to a slow start in Game 1, as Capital needed an eight-run third inning to break open a scoreless game. The margin grew to 10-0 in the fifth before Academy rallied for four runs, but Capital scored three times in the bottom of the fifth and once in the sixth to invoke the 10-run mercy rule.

The Lady Jaguars had four home runs, with Deanna Booker hitting two of them. Booker was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and Emma George also had three hits. Breanna Palmer and JoJo Bowannie also had homers in the opener.

In the nightcap, the Jaguars scored 12 times in the second to break up a 2-all tie and collected 20 hits in just four innings of work.

George went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a pair of doubles. Diaz also went 4-for-4 with a triple, and Bowannie had three hits and four RBIs.

Capital plays at Los Alamos on Wednesday with the district lead up for grabs.

The Lady Braves (11-6) halted a two-game skid with a nondistrict sweep of the Rangerettes at SFIS.

Frankie Chavez and Zoe Martinez each went 3-for-4, with Chavez driving in four runs and Martinez three. Martinez also had a home run. That was more than enough for Shannon Ortiz, who went the distance to improve to 7-4 on the season.

In the second game, Lauren Bekise had two hits, two RBIs and scored three runs, while Ortiz went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Arianna Marcotte was the winner in Game 2, going four innings to improve her record to 4-2.

WEST LAS VEGAS 4, POJOAQUE VALLEY 4 (NINE INNINGS, SUSPENDED)

The Elks had a three-hitter from Chross Jaramillo, but six errors allowed the Dons to score three unearned runs to squeeze out the win in the opener of a District 2-4A doubleheader in Las Vegas.

Game 2 went to extra innings, but play was suspended as darkness descended upon the field.

The two teams meet April 18 at Pojoaque.
