Santa Fe New Mexican

The past 100 years

From The Santa Fe New Mexican: April 10, 1917: Asking Governor Lindsey for protection for Grant and Luna counties in the present war situation, a delegation called on the executive today, conferred with him and will confer again with him and Col. E.C. Abbott tonight in the supreme court at the capitol.

The presence of 5000 Old Mexico Mexicans in the two counties and persistent rumors or German reservists south of the border have moved these citizens to lay the situation before the governor.

April 10, 1967: About 6,000 New Mexico truckers expect to be idled by the Teamsters Union dispute with interstate freight lines.

The lockout by major trucking firms against the union in protest of the Teamsters’ demands was limiting shipments today to those of an emergency or essential nature. … No union pickets were reported in the Albuquerque area. Most firms completed runs already in transit when the decision was reached Sunday to combat union demands.

It would be difficult to tell how soon the shutdown would affect the state or impair business, a New Mexico Motor Carriers spokesman said.

April 10, 1992: Every year, Santa Fe’s heroes of World War II gather to remember the surrender of Bataan to the Japanese.

This year, a Filipino diplomat came to Santa Fe to say thank you for the defense of the Philippines.

“I’m proud and honored to be given the task of expressing my country’s feelings,” Antonio Villamayor said Thursday at a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the fall of Bataan.

“My country would like to offer her gratitude to New Mexico, whose sons went there to fight with our sons.”
