Santa Fe New Mexican

The past 100 years

From The Santa Fe New Mexican:

April 18, 1917: Lieutenant J.B. Felkner, of the Imperial British Flying Corps, in an interview printed in the Philadelphia Inquirer, declares that there is an available squadron of more than 100 German airplanes in Mexico. He obtained his information, he says, from captured German aviators with whom he talked more than eighteen months ago. It was then he learned that in the fall of 1914 German mechanics and machinery — the latter designed for manufacturing motors, the former being expert machiners — reached Mexico.

April 18, 1967: El Diferente is looking a little different these days — St. Vincent Hospital has given him a shave and a haircut while he’s there recuperating from an attack of pneumonia.

El Diferente — Tommy Macaione — said today he feels “just fine” except for a little fever and doesn’t expect to be hospitalized much longer. And, he said, he wants to move back into Santa Fe. Tommy moved to Chimayo shortly before his illness, but, he said, “I would love to return. This is the city of my destiny.”

April 18, 1992: CHIMAYO — Joe Salazar has been blind since birth, but he’s made a pilgrimage to Chimayo for many years.

Frank Ulibarri used to be able to walk from Santa Fe to the Santuario de Chimayo, but his body is now too frail for that ordeal so he made the trek in a car.

On Friday, Ulibarri and Salazar joined thousands of faithful for the annual Good Friday pilgrimage to the Santuario de Chimayo to thank God for their health and that of their families, and for favors they have been granted during the year.
