From The Santa Fe New Mexican: April 30, 1917: The third state legislature, which convenes here in special session at noon tomorrow, will be asked to empower the governor to regulate the distribution and marketing of food products during the period of the war, with the object of preventing hoarding and exorbitant prices.

The legislature also will be asked to provide for selective drafting for the National Guard and any other military units, and to make available funds sufficient for any possible emergency. It has been suggested by some of the members of the War Committee that the amount made available should not be less than $1,000,000, and possibly should reach $1,500,000.

April 30, 1967: LOS ALAMOS — University of California Board of Regents met Saturday with Atomic Energy officials to sign a five-year contract for operation of the $237 million Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories by the University.

The University has been the prime contractor for the AEC at the lab since it was founded in Los Alamos in 1943. The Regents oversee the operation of nine campuses in California and LASL in New Mexico.

The contract signing ceremonies climaxed a two-day tour of LASL by the regents, which is the nation’s largest single developer of nuclear power for military and peace-time uses.

April 30, 1992: The Santa Fe City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to oppose a proposed controversial expansion of the Santa Fe Ski Area.

The proposal is unpopular with most city residents and would hurt the environment, councilors said.

“The Santa Fe Ski Area is attempting to push forward a proposal that is simply unacceptable to a vast majority of members of the community,” said Councilor Steven Farber, one of four councilors who sponsored a resolution against expansion plans.

… The federal Forest Service is expected to decide next year whether to approve the expansion.
