From The Santa Fe New Mexican: May 10, 1917: Secundino Romero, of Las Vegas, speaker of the house of representa­tives in 1915, has been elected permanent chairman of the Council of State Defense, appointed by Governor Lindsey Tuesday night under the provisions of the Public Defense measure. May 10, 1967: VALLECITOS — “They’re up there.” Joe Valdez, fire boss, pointed to the clumpy tear leading up El Ritito Canyon ridge where a bulldozer had worked late into Monday night to rip open the fire line.

“Those El Rito boys have been their since midnight, gonna be relieved pretty soon for some chow. They’re a mile up.”

VALLECITOS — The El Ritito Canyon fire, which ravaged over 500 acres of Carson National Forest Monday night and early Tuesday has broken the northeaste­rn fire line and is out of control.

Backed by winds which gusted to over 30 miles per hour during the night, the fire leap-frogged an eight-foot wide lane at the northern edge of the canyon, threatenin­g to destroy another 50-100 acres of timber.

May 10, 1992: A proposed land swap would make Gov. Bruce King and his brothers the owners of more than a thousand acres of federal land within minutes of downtown Santa Fe.

The governor and his brothers, Sam and Don King, are seeking to trade 22,600 acres they own in Cibola County for all or part of 3,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management land about six miles southwest of downtown Santa Fe. The land adjoins the deluxe Las Campanas resort and developmen­t.
