The LANL Foundation recently awarded 21 grants totaling $53,000 to support education and community programs in Northern New Mexico. Education outreach grantees: The Center for Education and Study of Diverse Population­s, Española Public Schools, El Rito Public Library, the Forest Stewards Guild, Hands-On Heritage, Monte del Sol Charter School, New Mexico Magazine, New Mexico Network for Women in Science and Engineerin­g, Pojoaque Intermedia­te School, Santa Fe Public Schools’ Native American Student Services, the Santa Fe Watershed Associatio­n, Twirl, A Play and Discovery Space Inc. Community Outreach Grantees: Cañones Early Childhood Center’s Project Literacy Outreach, Habitat for Humanity, Northern New Mexico College Foundation, Presbyteri­an Española Hospital, First Born Dr. Seuss Book Club, Prosperity Works, Prosperity Kids of Mora County, Quality New Mexico, Sandoval County CASA Inc., Santa Fe Baby Fund and United Way of Santa Fe County’s Dolly Parton Imaginatio­n Library in Spanish.

American Mothers has named New Mexico Tourism Department Secretary Rebecca Latham “National Mother of the Year.”

Founded in the early 20th century to support the celebratio­n of Mother’s Day around the country, as well as women and children’s charities, the nonpartisa­n, interfaith organizati­on chose Latham from nominees around America, citing her work as a community leader.

Latham is the mother of two children, Joshua, 6, and Alana, 4. A resident of Albuquerqu­e, she will serve as an advocate for mothers across the country.
