Santa Fe New Mexican

The past 100 years

From The Santa Fe New Mexican: June 16, 1917: Santa Fe came across handsomely with her subscription to the Liberty Loan; she produced last week on Registration Day; and next week, unless she fails to live up to tradition, she is going to set a pace for New Mexico with her subscription to the Red Cross war relief fund.

The local Red Cross chapter has been working hard and earnestly for the past week perfecting plans for next week’s campaign, and the committees feel certain that the people of the city are going to do their full duty before the week ends.

June 16, 1967: State anti-poverty officials have pieced together a comprehensive program for three northern New Mexico counties which they hope will promote fatter paychecks, smoother roads and less frustration for the area’s residents.

The proposals will be submitted to Washington officials, who have promised quick action on them.

Deep-rooted frustrations and the social needs which bred them have been the focus of attention both here and in Washington since the June 5 shooting raid on the courthouse in Tierra Amarilla and the dramatic military-style manhunt which followed it.

… The comprehensive program for the three counties — Rio Arriba, Taos and Mora — will be designed to help relieve some of the resentment.

June 16, 1992: Look up in the friendly skies over Santa Fe just about any day and you might see part of what could be called New Mexico State Airlines — a sizable state government fleet of aircraft, shuttling agency officials from one part of New Mexico to the other, at a cost of more than $1 million a year.

State agencies own or lease 14 functioning aircraft — 13 planes and one helicopter. At least eight of these ferry passengers. The aircraft also are used to take aerial photographs, to track wild animals or for police rescue and enforcement missions.
