Santa Fe New Mexican

The past 100 years

-

From The Santa Fe New Mexican: June 19, 1917: What we cannot do directly ourselves with our own hands, we must do vicariously. Wherefore, we cannot go ourselves with our boys to Flanders and to France, and wherever the bugles may call them, with their stainless flag above them, we must make it possible for the Red Cross to go in our stead.

And the Red Cross cannot go unless we furnish the money to send it.

There is no way open for us to refuse. If we have only a dollar we must give it. If we have more, we must give more.

June 19, 1967: A newly formed war on poverty group is asking for more than $5 million for three northern New Mexico counties — Rio Arriba, Taos and Mora. Called the Sangre de Cristo Community Action Program, it will meet in Santa Fe tonight for final approval.

June 19, 1992: Everyone involved agreed it won’t be a meeting of old friends when Santa Fe City Councilor Debbie Jaramillo addresses the Santa Fe County Chamber of Commerce at its annual banquet June 30. After all, she’s the councilor who once said of chamber members: “The only understanding they have is when it comes to turning a quick buck.”

Jaramillo, a longtime vocal chamber critic, admits that she was surprised when chamber officials called and asked her to speak.
