From The Santa Fe New Mexican: June 30, 1917: On the death last night of Clemente Ortiz, aged 85 years, Santa Fe lost not only an old timer but one of the most prominent members of the famous Ortiz family, and for many years recognized as a leading authority on things of historical interest in Santa Fe.

Mr. Ortiz died of old age. He had been ailing for several weeks. His friends, who frequently passed his home on Water street; were informed several days ago that there was little hope of his recovery, for he grew weaker and weaker. …

Mr. Ortiz was a descendant of the famous Nicholas Ortiz Nino Ladron de Guevara, a captain under Don Diego de Vargas. He received the Cajo del Rio Grant in 1744. Nicholas had two grandsons, Juan Antonio Ortiz and Antonio Jose. They were recognized as the richest men in New Mexico in their time. Mr. Ortiz was a descendant of Juan Antonio. His great grandfather was Pedro Antonio Ortiz and his father was Antonio Matias Ortiz. His mother was Rosa Salazar.

June 30, 1967: The big black bear that mauled two Lubbock boys Thursday had a feast on the state last night and then quietly slipped back into hiding, thanks to a ‘goodwill’ gesture by a visitor to the Tesuque Camping area below Hyde Park.

Louis Berghofer set a trap early yesterday afternoon in the same area the bear attacked Randal Samford and Jimmy Carlton Tuesday morning, but someone came along later an propped the door open with a stick.

The mature black bear, estimated to weight around 300 pounds, strolled into the cage, took the bait (suet) and left when the door failed to fall.

June 30, 1992: At last, Pablo Mabbitt and Marth Ann Appel have found a common ground.

Neither Santa Fean is happy with the U.S. Supreme Court’s Monday ruling on abortion rights. Both have vowed to continue fighting for their causes. The Supreme Court upheld a woman’s right to an abortion, but allowed several conditions imposed by a Pennsylvania law to remain in place.
