Truth still matters in political debate

Joette O’Connor’s Letter to the Editor (“Paying the price,” June 7) deserves a reasonable response. O’Connor asserts that conservatives were unfairly depicted in Steve Terrell’s article (“Outrage! Everyone’s mad about something,” Roundhouse Roundup, June 4). She cites a comedian’s depiction of Donald Trump’s bloodied head as proof of unfairness toward Trump.

While Kathy Griffin’s image of Trump was made in poor taste, Griffin does not represent the Democratic Party. She should instead take a look at herself and the president and party she supports. Her support for party over country is very telling.

We know for sure that Russia meddled in our election, and we are investigating to find out if the Trump campaign coordinated with the Russians as well. Yes, this election was illegitimate.

O’Connor voted for a misogynist (Trump’s “grab them by the …” comment is one of the milder statements by Trump — a 60-plus-year-old adolescent at quotation time). He is someone who mocks the disabled, people of color, immigrants, gays, Muslims, you name them — everyone except white, straight men. She voted for someone who doesn’t believe in science, religion or history.

O’Connor even asserts that there is an organized effort to bring down this illegitimate president along with democracy in the U.S. There is a better argument that the destruction of democracy began failing with the election of Trump, who is more disliked around the world within his short tenure than most other U.S. presidents.

O’Connor made the laughable statement that she is backed by facts. Instead of reading her news on right-wing websites or Fox News, she should try finding out the truth from multiple reliable sources.

We all have a right to free speech, but we also must be held accountable for saying things that simply are not true.
