Recalling the best of the best as the ESPYs turn 25

-

It’s been more than 24 years since an emotional Jimmy Valvano took the stage in the inaugural ESPY Awards and implored viewers to “never ever give up,” fully aware that the cancer that was spreading throughout his body would soon claim his life, which it did seven weeks later.

That speech in 1993 seemed to set the tone for the production, which has seen more than its share of touching moments over the years, along with plenty of laughs and even some music. And of course, a celebration of the best in sports year after year.

This year’s show, which airs on ABC Wednesday, July 12, from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, marks the awards’ 25th year and hosting it is a man very familiar to ESPY viewers, former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning. In fact, he’s been the recipient of several awards and he figures in at least one of the show’s many memorable moments, some of which are detailed below.

Valvano’s Arthur Ashe Courage Award speech (1993): There wasn’t a dry eye at New York’s Madison Square Garden as a gaunt, weak Valvano struggled to the podium and delivered his inspirational speech urging perseverance. It became the awards’ signature moment.

Jamie Foxx sings to Serena Williams (2003-04): The Oscarwinning actor showed impressive musical and comedic chops when he performed his R&B song “Can I Be Your Tennis Ball?” – and playfully directed the tennis star to spank him with a heart-shaped racket with Williams’ image on it.

Will Ferrell accepts Tiger Woods’ Best Male Athlete Award (2008): Ferrell was at his deadpan best when he accepted the award on an injured Woods’ behalf, speaking as Woods as he concluded the speech with “What can I say? I am the best. In your face. Goodnight everybody.”

Peyton Manning stars in “The Blind Side” spoof (2010): Manning’s dry sense of humor played well opposite Sandra Bullock in this satire of the Oscarnominated 2009 drama.
