Though this new documentar­y obviously is a portrait of the title country, it’s also a very personal journey for wildlife cameraman Colin Stafford-Johnson, who leads the twohour trek. In addition to showing the visual wonders of the Atlantic coast of Ireland, he profiles its vast variety of creatures and discusses the individual challenges they face in keeping the region their home.

8 p.m. on A&E The Lowe Files

Never let it be said that Rob Lowe is afraid to think outside the box when it comes to picking his next project. The popular actor ventures into the unscripted TV arena with this new nine-episode series, which follows Lowe and his two sons, John Owen and Matthew, as they travel across the country exploring unsolved mysteries. In the series premiere, the Lowes journey to Ione, Calif., to visit a condemned former boys’ reformator­y said to house vengeful spirits.

8 p.m. on BBCA Broadchurc­h

In the new “Episode 6,” after Ellie and Hardy (Olivia Colman, David Tennant) interrogat­e a new suspect, Ellie finds devastatin­g evidence linking the man to the crime during a search of his premises. Back at the station, Katie (Georgina Campbell) confronts Ellie and Hardy with an unsettling truth about her involvemen­t in the investigat­ion.

8 p.m. on DSC Darkness

We’ve seen contestant­s on survival shows pushed to their limits by scarcity of food, shelter and clothing, but what about light? This harrowing new unscripted series, which is derived from extreme training scenarios designed by NASA and U.S. military agencies, follows three strangers — who never have seen each other in the light of day — pulling together and combining their skill sets to escape from pitch-black settings such as abandoned mines.

8 p.m. on USA The Sinner

For the first time since her days on 7th Heaven, Jessica Biel stars in a series with this new limited-run drama, playing a wife and mother who suddenly exhibits unlikely and lethal behavior. She has no idea why she committed an act of violence, nor does the detective on the case (Bill Pullman, pictured), but he’s determined to find out. Biel also is an executive producer of the show, which is based on the same-named novel by Petra Hammesfahr and also stars Christophe­r Abbott.
